Any Need to Upgrade GPU (Crossfire 7970GHz)

I've been looking to upgrade my system, but the more I look at the new cards, the more confused I get if I would see any benefit...

I did a little analysis (based on the projection that the 480 will be about as powerful as a 390x/980) and when you look at the numbers, a 980 is about equal to 2x7970s. So the only "upgrade" I would get is moving from 3GB of GDDR5 to 8GB GDDR5 and moving from a multi-card setup to a single card...

Then I look at the 1070 and the story is pretty similar...
I could pay the $425 or whatever these will actually retail for and get about 20% more performance, move to a single card, etc. Again, doesn't seem like it is worth the price. Not only that, but I don't have faith in NVIDIA in DX12 atm, and since that is what is coming...

The GTX 1080 is even worse based on the pricing / availability...

I feel like my only REAL option is going to a dual 480 setup, but then I am stuck with another multi-GPU setup and about $500 - $600 out of my pocket...

I could wait for Vega / Big Pascal...but that is at least 8 months out (don't even say the October rumor as AMD directly dismissed that).

Anyone have a similar setup? What are your plans?

Its not going to be a fun wait, but Vega/Big Pascal seems to be the logical choice. You could do a side grade to a single RX 480, but that would be a stop gap until Vega.

Ive got an r9 390 and considering going "side grading" as some would say. If it runs tessellation better then its an upgrade, its also going to run WAY cooler and use a whole lot less power. I def wouldn't call it a side grade especially if it runs as well as the leaks/rumors have been going around.

If it gives you a 10fps boost over your setup for 200-300$/€ its totally worth it isn't it? Ngreedia charges you 500$ for a 5fps boost.

Id imagine that 3gb frame buffer has to be a hinderance at 1080p no? Ive seen quite a few games already stick around 3-4gb and a few go over. Plus you wont have to wait for crossfire profiles and games that run like garbage on crossfire. Unless you dont play a lot of newer games who knows. Dual rx 480 would def destroy your 7970 by quite a bit if they scale nicely.

Some good points in here. I forgot about power consumption...my 7970s are saving me any money that is for sure. I might do a sidegrade to a RX480 and then when Vega comes out, sell the 480 and pick up Vega. That might be my best option.

I'll be upgrading the rest of the setup to...

i7 6700k
16GB DDR4 3200MHz RAM
M.2 SSD

So overall I should be getting a pretty decent boost. Hopefully the RX 480 will be stocked well as is rumored.

I hope it is, and i hope ekwb gets a release day or close to a release day water block so i can go right to it. Not sure if ill even go AIB since they do have better power phases but we'll see.
