[Guru3D] Samsung 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD: SM961 Ships Next week - Page 16

I do agree with Tojara its not so relevant.
Question is will they be able to improve the overall performance of the drive or wil they do that by releasing a new version for home use.
Anyhow the 950 is in my view the better choice for modding as well. As the review i seen clearly show the 950 is for home usage the better choice.
I was hoping to see some competition at the market to show similar performance but i guess samsung is prolly going to keep the performance crown for a while.
When they would release a Pro version of this ssd i already know that i want one in my machine.
And yes i would use it to load game, i learned not to install all games i own.
Thats just plain silly especially because downloading a game with 12.5 MB/s makes that such a short wait its no longer needed.

So i only put the games i want to play on the ssd, so the max i have installed is in between 5 to 10 which i play day/weekly if not i delete the games and reinstall it when i want to play them again.
Anyway this drive has impressive performance but is not a real home usage ssd

Think most people are here for the 1TB on a stick SKU which 961 have and 950 Pro don't. Beside that there is not much point to this drive beside slightly better $/GB and better Sequential/4K QD32

and maybe better thermal mode, so that 960 would not throttled under heavy load
post #154 of 190
I think that the makers need to look at better ways to cool these ssd's anyway.
Lots of people aim a cooling fan at the ssd or try to find other ways to cool them down already.
I saw some persons posting they used a old cpu cooler/watercooling blocks to get the ssd a few degrees down in temp.
But its not only ssd which suffer from heat, i bought several usb sticks which become so hot you can not touch them with your bare hands.
I even got blisters on my fingers from one of them, when i wanted to place it at the goal machine to pump over the 30 GB data.

I am not sure just how long more to the 960 pro drive...

If my reaction time is 0.2s then if it took 5 seconds to start the game I would start 5.2s in. If it took 4.8s then I would start 5s in. Putting a game on a faster drive is not that stressful, and I already calculated the amount of time I would save. Your assumption is that if I bought a faster drive and put a game on it for work then it must mean I'm trying to save every millisecond possible, sitting there with lightning fast reflexes and that's just not the case. Or are you trying to debate with me what amount of time I'd consider 'nifty'?

If your running a Z170 motherboard the max seq. reads you will see is around 3100-3300. That's the max the Z170 can handle. That was my max read running two 950 pro's in RAID 0. If you are buying two sm961's for raid 0 you maybe wasting your money. redface.gif
You will see double the write speed as that will be lower than 3300.

Sorry I've just ordered x2 SM961 ssds and was thinking of putting them in raid 0 on my z170 deluxe with x2 pcie angelbird adapters......

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this wasting my money.... Because I will never get the speeds at 7100MB/s according to Nizzens raid 0? 😢

I use X99 and Adapters to get enough bandwidth. z170 with buildt in m.2 slots does not seem to have 2x pci-e 3.0 x4 dedicated lanes...

Oh ok so if I put the two m2 cards on the pcie adapters I won't be restricted? Whereas on the mb I will be?

Socket 1151 CPUs only have 16 PCIe 3.0 lanes so if you have a dedicated GPU anything plugged into the PCI-E bus will steal lanes from the GPU. If you have a motherboard that allows a x8, x4, x4 configuration it might be possible without too many downsides (my motherboard doesn't allow it). One drive on the chipset's 4 PCIe lanes, or it the motherboard's M.2 slot, and one in an x8 slot from the CPU, with x8 left for the GPU, would also work.

edit: the chipset has 20 PCI-E 3.0 lanes, which are used for the M.2 slot(s) and to connect everything else, but only an 8 GT/s connection to the CPU so that 8 GT/s is shared by everything plugged into it (M.2, SATA, USB, audio, LAN, etc.). My motherboard only has 4 lanes shared between the M.2 and my only x4 PCI-E slot, and only one of them can be active.
