The funny thing is that you can barely buy a decent 4GB stick of DDR3 with $40 :p

today, but at release day it was nearly 50 bucks.

I've seen somewhere that it's like 22$ for 4gb of the newest Gddr5 chips and that is after a price drop.
So 30$ seems reasonable.

Considering I can only fill up a 2gb frame buffer with The Witcher 3 on high settings at 1440p....not sure if 8GB is worth it unless you play GTA V or something thats very memory heavy. Card has to be fast enough to fill a frame buffer. This card may be 10-15% faster than a 970, maybe, but will it need twice the memory? I doubt it. $199 card is the best deal.

What card are you using?

In any case, I actually have to agree with you. A card of this caliber will usually not require (or even be able to use) 8GB of memory. But, I think AMD has learned its lesson with the Fury (X). I do think however, that such a large memory pool will make this card last longer.

Yeah, amazing that I play @ 4k with a Fury X and have never seen an issue, right? wink.gif

Chances are good that his beloved Fury is going to become obsolete due to memory constraints before it runs into a compute limited scenario. It happened with my 4850, it happened with my 5850, and it happened with my 6970. It's why I was pleased when the 390 launched with 8 GB as standard.

That HBM! I have run into that 4GB quite a bit with SLI 980s at 4k. Mostly it is ok if I dont use heavy AA or if I knock textures down a tick. I dont think its worth the sidegrade these cards would be to switch to 8gb RX480s. But I am very happy to see AMD giving us performance roughly equal to my current GPU set up at 1/2 the cost and 1/2 the power requirements...Whenever AMD releases monster cards, I will be picking up 2 (as always).

It it going to be/has been an exciting year for technology, with GPUs on new nodes and AMD finally giving us something new on the CPU side of the business. But even with all this excitement, I think next year is going to be the jump in for me, with the big GPUs dies and intel pinging back after Zen.

AMD has never done me wrong with GPUs. My 7970s are still rocking at 1080p with no signs of slowing down. In todays market though, they are burning 500W for performance that can be had at about 100W...the end is near for that pair.

On a purely BoM perspective it's good value. IMO cheaping out and getting the 4GB is a reasonable move for most 1080P users and some 1440P. However the $30 spent now on 8GB may pay itself back or better if it is sold after a future upgrade, compared to 4GB version.
