i5-2500K stock cooler on i7-6700K?? Can I?

Thread Starter
I bought new parts to upgrade my system. My 6700K was DOA and I've been out of a PC for almost 2 weeks. Should have new one near the end of this week. Currently posting using my phone so sorry if this is poorly spaced or not in the best location.

Was using a H70 cooler but bought a new case because I plan to do custom liquid very soon. New case doesn't reach with H70 and I'd rather use stock cooler to test system before spending all the time mounting and removing things.

Of course 6700K doesn't come with a stock cooler but I have a stock Intel cooler from a i5-2500K never used somewhere in a box downstairs, probably have one from an i5 K version ivy bridge too. Safe to use these on an i7-6700K until I get my custom loop built? Not sure how the stock coolers varied generation to generation. Based on TDP of 2500K being a few points higher than 6700K I'm assuming it should be fine? Unless I read that wrong or I'm missing something?

*Edited to say i7-6700K. (Not i7-6600K tongue.gif )

You can use the 2500K stock cooler on 6600K.

It will seat properly and have adequate heat dissipation? Can anyone else also confirm this?

It will sit properly. Since most skylakes appear to run cooler than haswell / haswell-refresh CPUs using the stock cooler would be fine in this case. I wouldn't know for sure if you had a i7-6700K instead as that heats up more due to hyperthreading.

Heat dissipation should be fine - Skylake and Haswell both use less energy/generate less heat than Sandy Bridge. The Sandybridge heatsink should be able to handle the cooler chips just fine.

Thank you all for the replies but it seems that I've been providing misinformation. The processor I'm looking at putting the i5-2500K stock cooler on is a i7-6700K. (Not an i7-6600K, which doesn't exist rolleyes.gif)

Will it still be fine?

Yes.

1) i7 6700k = TDP of 91watts. i5 2500k = TDP of 95watts. Heatwise you're fine.

2) The 1151 Skylake has the same mounting holes as the 1150 Haswell, which has the same mounting holes as the 1155 Sandy Bridge. You should be able to line up the holes and attach it without problems.
