FX8320 + Asus M5A97 LE R2.0 20x Multiplier Possible?

Hello everybody,
I need to ask a question, please keep in mind that I'm a total newb at ocing so...
I've got an FX8320 cpu on an Asus M5A97 LE R2.0, with a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo sitting on top.
I know the motherboard is lacking heatsinks on vrm mosfets (I'm just repeating what I read, what that means is a mistery to me) so it's not recommended for overclocking, BUT: this applies also to the case where an FX8320 is brought to the frequencies of an FX8350 via multiplier passing from 17.5 (I think) to 20 without touching voltages?
Any answer is very appreciated, thanks in advance.

That board has unheat sinked 4+2 VRMs. What that means is they are doing more work at the same clocks as an 8+2 board, plus they are not getting any cooling. Go here and click on ASUS under the chart and then find your board.
http://www.overclock.net/t/946407/amd-motherboard-vrm-information-list

And sure, go as far as you can with the stock voltages but make sure the voltages are entered manually to keep them where you want them. When the VRMs overheat they will throttle so you will know when you have gone too far.

Thanks, I will check the list asap. I might buy some Enzotech heatsinks for the vrm to be safe.
Yesterday I tried clocking the cpu to 4.0ghz via multiplier (17.5 > 20.0) and it looked like it was working well.
Anyway, isn't the 8320 just an underclocked 8350? Hypothetically if the board supports a stock 8350, an 8320 with an increased multiplier should work exactly the same, am I wrong?
Gonna check the voltages, anyway, thanks for the tip!

There is this thing called the silicon lottery so there is no guarantee that a given CPU will overclock like the next one. A CPU with a higher number is a little more likely to overclock better. That is it. So generally an 8350 SHOULD get a slightly better overclock than an 8320. But a good 8320 will do better than a bad 8350.

I read something about the lottery, but anyway my aim is just to increase the multiplier leaving the rest as is, so that my 8320 will reach the 8350 speed, nothing more.
Actually, I already know my cpu runs fine at 4.0ghz, so I wil just wait for the vrm heatsinks to arrive and then I will bump up the stock multiplier to 20.

What do you think about those temperatures after a 20 minutes render? (Room temp is high, around 30C I suppose, damn hot here)

A 20 minute render? Using what? format Factory? Handbrake?

Anyway, considering the ambient temperature those are fine temps. It gets warm here too and I wait until it's cool to do any X264 stuff. Even gaming can get spikes into the 60C + range even though the average gaming temp is 40C or so.

BTW you will get get more and more usable information with HWINFO64 than with HWMonitor. This is a pic i took a few months ago when it was cool after a gaming session. It shows the CPU is doing ok, the motherboard temps and volts, and it shows the GPU running a bit hot. So I went to work on getting more cool air to the video card.

I'm sorry, you're right: I work with Maya and Vray, so that was the render about.
Gaming is around 57 CPU/50 Package max.
Thanks for the tip about HWINFO, I'll check it out!

Ah no wonder you want to OC! Is Maya still a single thread app? Of course it is multi thread now with those temperatures.

The 212 at your vcore of 1.344 volts should be running cooler than that. What is air flow through your case like? If the hot air isn't getting out it will overheat.

EDIT: Also, there is a little app called the ICC Patcher that will make your stuff run better. It searches for "either or" switches in the code that intel gives out to help developers that gimps AMD CPUs. This is not too common in new programs but in older programs that have evolved over the years it can make a difference.

Maya is heavily multithreaded, and the Vray renderer as well. While rendering all eight cores ramp up fast to 100% and keep that load for as long as it takes.
Actually I swapped the 212 (that was never shipped to me by the seller) with a Cryorig H7 that should anyway be similar afaik.
Temps look high to me as well, I tried to reapply thermal paste a couple of times (cleaning cpu and heat sink each time first) but no luck. The thing that makes me wonder is that the heatsink's part that actually touches the cpu is not as wide as the cpu itself so a part of the cpu has no direct dissipation, even tho the H7 is stated to be a good cooler.
About the airflow (I'm already overclocking from 3500 to 4000 in that pic) there's a fan extracting warm air in the back and two fans pulling fresh air from the front.
Still, the heatsink's winglets get just a bit warm even at full load.
Maybe I should try again with the thermal paste? frown.gif
