FX8320 + Asus M5A97 LE R2.0 20x Multiplier Possible? - Page 2

cigar.gif Wha???? The heat sink base isn't as big as the CPU???? I have never heard of that before! The AMD CPUs have been the same size for a bazillion years and there is no excuse for such poor engineering. I'm a little concerned with the Phanteks 14PE because its base is just barely bigger than the CPU. But the Cryorig H9 does have a good reputation with intel users.

There are fans and then there are FANS. I bet those case fans are totally silent. How big are they and do they actually move any air? I once bought a $25 Noctua fan because everyone was talking it up. It was indeed silent, but it also moved no air at all. Replaced it and the stock case fans with Aerocool Sharks that everyone bad mouthed and temperatures dropped. Then replaced them with cheap Arctic Cooling F12s and got cool and quiet.

Try an experiment. Remove the side cover and see if temperatures drop while rendering. If they do, then better case fans are needed.

Oh, yes, such heatsinks exist. I know first hand:

http://www.deepcool.com/product/cpucooler/2013-12/7_210.shtml

I bought it and it doesn't fully cover an AMD CPU. I suspect it's made with Intel in mind, although i don't know the dimensions of Intel chips. They cut on manufacturing costs. I gave it away to a friend at the end. Also had horrible AMD retention clip, you could actually move the heatsink, while latched onto the socket.

The only good thing about that cooler, was the fan (very silent) and the nickel plating. The rest, a big disappointment. But it does the job for a friend where i gave it with my old 1090T.

Aww crap. I just took a look at the Cryorig H7 and it only has 3 heat pipes. That is not enough cooling power for an FX. Plus its base is too small. doh.gif I still have an old Sempron 2200+ sitting in a drawer that has to be over a decade old and it is the same 40x40mm size as my 8370.

What to do, what to do? For now set a red line of 62C for steady state temperatures. Take the OC to that point and start looking for a real actual cooler.

At this point I only recommend the twin tower coolers with adjustable fans like the Noctua D14/D15, Silverstone HE01, and Phanteks PH-TC14PE. These coolers let you slide the center fan down close to the motherboard so the fan is blowing some cool air directly onto the VRMs. The Raijintek TISIS might also work. Maybe. But it is on sale now for $70.

Yeah, i think you 're right on everything. The temps he gets, with that ambient and this cooler, are normal i 'd say. They 're not great, but they 're normal. The cooler's base being narrow + his fan, like you say, is geared more for silence (his CPU is at 66 and the fan is at 1500 rpm!!! Unless he has borked some BIOS setting on fan control) + the official specs of that cooler say it's up to 140W (and we know that this means barely adeguate for that).

I would undervolt to about 1.28 for 4Ghz, just to cut down some of the heat, waiting for some better cooler. He now runs at 1.34v. At 1.28v, if stable (most FX are), he could see temps dropping to about 60C, by guessing.

EDIT:

Yep, his fan is by far inadeguate:

Dimension L120 mm x W120 mm x H25.4 mm
Weight 134 g
Rated Speed 330 ~ 1600 RPM ±10 %
Noise Level 10 ~ 25 dBA
Air Flow 49 CFM
Air Pressure 1.65 mmH2O
Ampere 0.16 A

@ OP: If you don't want to buy new cooler, do this: Undervolt the CPU (disable APM, Turbo and try to pass IBT AVX/Prime95 overnight with 1.28v for 4Ghz, under load inside Windows) + CHANGE FAN, to a high static pressure fan at 2000-2200 RPM.

Putting faster case fans, could also help.
