AMD v Intel build help

Thread Starter
Been away from field for a bit and I'm not up on current CPU and mobo tech and my rig just failed last night. I figured since I need to at least get a new CPU I might as well up grade my mobo as well so I can get a newer higher performing CPU. any help would be appreciated.

Basic overview:

**Air cooled
**640w PSU (larger possible but only if 100% necessary
**must be mATX so that I can utilize the brand new case I just bought before my rug died last night
**Must be DDR3 and able to utilize RAM up to DDR3-12600u preferably with 4+ Slots

I am not gaming so I do not need an amazing GPU. more of less an on-board hdmi and/or DVI are all that I require. and I'm trying not to kill myself in the wallet. I have all the other HDD and RAM already and would like to be able to reused all the new parts I just bought I have more cabbage for my CPU and mobo but at the same time I don't want to spend an arm and a leg. I'm gonna be out of work so I need to my funds last but I need my PC.

Thank you in advance.

Where do you live? Without knowing where you live most people will list Newegg or other US based etailers.

thank you. i think i have settled on the AMD APU A8-7650K i believe and i think i am just going to go with an MSI or Asus mobo.
Both AMD and Intels basic offerings should do fine if your just using it for a MM computer. The A8 7650K should even have enough GPU for you. Do you need the new high speed data transfer peripherals like USB 3.1, thunderbolt etc?

actually the USB3.0 is a great feature because all my stuff is stored on those drives load faster and save faster. i also use it to run my security cameras. but up until this point ive been using an OCed AMD Athlon ii x2 245 reger. 2.4 giggles to 3.8 stable on an MSI board. so i think that the slight difference in the A-8 to A10 is so minor that i wont notice it because both are so much more advanced than the regor.

i found and MSI board with 8 gb ram PC3-14900 and the A10-5800k for $80 but i get the feeling that something is wrong with it. but for roughly the same price i can get the A8-7650K and the Asus board and have 16bg ram and i think thats a better package and should last me at least 3 years being i am overclocking it a bit to boost performance.

thank you for your advice.

Welcome to OCN. Big thing is you need to give us an idea of your budget, otherwise people will make you a $5k build. lol no joke.

So you're going to have to get a new motherboard regardless if you want to upgrade your CPU. Since you don't game, why don't you go with an ITX build? It sounds to me like you're looking for something smaller. ITX would be your best bet. ATM, till AMD releases their Zen lineup, Skylake is the best CPU to get.

It'd do this:
1. ITX Motherboard
2. New case, get a TINY ITX case.

Then everything else is determined by your budget...

.

That should work well for what your doing and the extra ram wont hurt either.

I figured that out. I'm limited to about $100 maybe 150 but only if 1000% needed. I hustled this last night. its a POS but better than what I had. ATI Radeon HD3450 256MB PCI-E x16 Low Profile Video Card. but I like the MSI mobo with 4 DIMMs so I can expand. it's just was with the extra money for the A10 over the A8 with it if I'm only planning on it laying me a few years before I build my $3k monster. this was very unexpected and I'm trying to save as much as possible and I already have a PSU, Case, RAM (pc3-14900) 8gb (2x4gb). and the case is mATX. so to stay on budget I'm sort of stuck. but I figured anything would be better than the 2.4 Athlon II x2 245 regor OCed to 3.8ghz. But the i3s are older than the AMD apus A series. isn't it? and that's the only chip I could afford without going well over budget.

Best case I'd love to get another athlon like I had that fits my mobo just to get me through a few weeks unruly new parts arrive. and 90% of the Athlon II x2 record are core unlockable, overclockable and they are around 10-15$. I may find one I like and just get it to try it. wish I knew someone that has one I could borrow. but Thanx for your help. you've been helpful. can't remember did you tell me that overall a mobo that has the amount of DIMM slots and the proper pin set for the CPU and contain enough connections for what I use they are basically the same. at least in the range I'm looking at.

Thought on getting an AM3 CPU for 5-15$ would be worth it until I find the right board and CPU in my budget? Thanx in advance.

I already have a mATX case and everything. so I'm looking for the least expensive fix and at the same time get a slight upgrade that will last me 3-4 years. in limited to a 100$ budget.

IF your budget is $100 then I don't think you'll get a motherboard and CPU out of that...at least not very good ones... I'd say you need at least $150-200 for a decent AMD setup... probably ~$300-400 for Intel.
