Trying to help Dad with his second rig. Could you look and give some imput other than "Its a dead end platform sell everything and start over."

First: What he has available at the moment:
Asus Sabertooth 990Xfx R2.0
up to 32 gb ram- G.Skill Trident PC3-14900 32 GB DIMM 1866 MHz DDR3 SDRAM Memory
MSI AMD Radeon R7 270 2gb DDR5 OC
Thermaltakes Tough Power 750W 80 Plus Gold PSU Fx 8320 CPU
Thermaltakes Water Cooler 3.0 240m Riiding RGB Edition PWM
A huge Smilodon PC case he got at a pawn shop with several fans for $15...lol That's my dad! Can't pass a pawn shop without trying to get the better of the pawnshop dealer

So i am trying to surprise him. I got him the 990fx & the 32gb gskill ram today as well as the Thermaltakes Water Cooler for $220. He wants to upgrade what he currently has because he wants to game beyond World of Warships/Tanks, Homeworld Remastered, Both Xcoms now and Fractured Space. He is thinking of the new Doom and a few others. So i got an opinion from a builder/seller and was told he definitely needs a new 4gb GPU if he wants to go beyond what he is currently playing. Also that his current CPU is good but again if he wants to get into better games he needs to move up to the CPU to FX8350. I was thinking all he needs is a better GPU. The R9 380 was the recommendation. I was trying to get my siblings to chip in between them to buy it for him but the cheep a-holes are pleading poverty. So i may have to do it for him or help Dad get it by throwing some more cash his way.

Right now he claims a problem with the current rig,
Current rig;
GA 970A-ds3p mobo,
FX8320, 16gb Kingston 1600mhz ram
and the same psu above,
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus cooler.

Frankly I don't see the problem when i sit and watch him play World of Warships. The water looks as real as i see on any waterway! But i went ahead and paid the $220 for the Sabertooth 990X and the 32Gb Gskils and that new water-cooler, the dealers was really great I think on the deal

So the question are:

In your opinion does he have a decent gpu for now and stick with it and maybe OC it a bit? The FX8320.
With the Fx8320 and other components, will it bottleneck his game playing?
With the new components should he buy FX8350 or move to Fx9xxx? I think he has a very nice cooler there but I'm not an expert.
Does cutting from 32gb to say 16 gb on the ram help the bottleneck?

He can always sell the extra ram or all of it and use the ram of his current rig?
Is there a more conservative 4gb GPU I can recommend to him.
Does he need to go FX 8350 And the 4gb R9 380 GPU?

I posted this on Tedshardware and go one responder immediately telling me how dead end the system was and how I should just start over. While I respect his opinion it really did not answer the question. This is for my dad and he's on a budget and I was trying to help. I'm not an expert, nor an Intel/AMD fanboy. I bought according to what I could afford and what he had on hand.

Just OC the 8320,

16Gb ram is still more than enough but faster speeds would be better aomwhere in the range of 1866Mhz - 2133Mhz

wait for the RX480

Thats what I would do.

Hope this helps.

The GPU is the limiting factor. A 270 just isn't powerful enough for more modern games on higher settings. Going to 4GB / 8GB GDDR5 isn't as important as a general GPU upgrade, but pretty much everything out now has 4GB or 8GB anyways, so no worries there.

I suggest waiting a week and getting an RX 480 8GB for $229. This will be your best bang for the buck and should bring your dad up to more modern standards.

Also - your processor is fine for now. Overclock it if it is under water and you will be fine. Or don't and you will still be fine.

Well thank you both for the input. Now can any of you link me to a site or thread on how to OC the 8320 so I can send it to him? I can also tell him to sell some of the extra stuff on ebay and save it for the Rx 480, that will keep him busy and away from texting me...lol thumb.gif

He will have this, GSkill Trident PC3-14900 32 GB (4X8gb) DIMM 1866 MHz DDR3 SDRAM Memory. Use only 16 and sell the rest towards a new GPU? He can also sell the rest of the extra stuff and probably pay off the whole new GPU.

I would not have spent the money on a sabretooth unless custom water cooling and recommend returning it if possible

A 970a-ud3p or 990fxa-ud3 would OC the 8320 to 4.5-4.6 ghz with a decent air cooler. As the others have said get the $229 AMD 480 8gb

again true one ketch. not much is known about this gpu.

amd usually is far better at higher res and nvidia lower res. (lower res being 1080p)

just some food for thought.

anyone who says you need a 8350 or 9xxx does not undertstand amds.

all 8xxx9 and 9xxx are the same chip just diff bins. your chip may or may not be able to get as high but should reach 4.6 easy enough.

drop in here http://www.overclock.net/t/1318995/official-fx-8320-fx-8350-vishera-owners-club

they and i if avail will help you ( busy season atm. ) just make sure to tell them you dont want max oc. just max oc you can get with current equip

assuming the cooler is same as most aio 240s you should get at least 4.6 hopefully 4.8. with higher mem he should enjoy it. basic rules of oc increase cpu\nb by 0.1v and nb by 0.1v

increase multi and vcore and stress test. ( use either prime or ibt avb ( NOTnormal ibt, avx has 80 + gflops ibt normal 40ish ) and any negative result in ibtavx is a failure ( it will say it suceeded but it didnt )

you can download ibt avx from first post of that thread. ill copy my quote to that thead as well fyi

hello,
try different slots with the ram, think its 2 and 4 slots, if it stuttering. the motherboard manual explains there the overclocking slots, don't worry about the amount to much, I have 8gb and it works good. if you want to keep the 16gb or 32 gb in there, set it to 1333mhz, it might be more stable there and you wont notice much difference at 1333mhz.my motherboard autos to 1333mhz from 1866 and I don't notice it.
next is that gpu, its just to small really, you need a larger one. your psu will handle a one big card, and I have tried two gpu on a 750w with similar rig (evga 750w)
it did not like two cards, so get the biggest single gpu you can get.
