Thermaltakes Water Cooler 3.0 240m Riiding RGB Edition PWM, part of the purchase!

Overclock the 8320, overclock the RAM and get a 8GB RX480.
Pretty good gaming PC that will last a quite long.
I'd OC the CPU first, the 8300 series are some decent overclockers so I'd expect a decent increase in performance. And of course upgrade that GPU! Consider the 480, or maybe wait for 1060 and see how that goes. And I don't normally recommend crossfire, but I'd also consider that an option.
Hope we helped thumb.gif

I appreciate the replies. It almost impossible to get that new GPU near me. Time is a factor. But now that I got the building bug I've put aside my android flashing and thinking of a built for myself to play some games with the old man now that he's finally almost retired and found gaming. I am reading and learning here so all advice is welcomed.

It's a bit rough on the CPU department if you want to build a PC now. Out of principle I don't buy Intel but if I wanted to build a midrange PC now an i5 would be my only option. For the GPU if you are buying new,try and go for the new generation ones, 28nm is out of fashion smile.gif

Yep. What this guy said. Unless you can wait for Zen, an i5-6600k with an RX 480 or GTX 1070 (depending on if you're red or green) will suite you quite well.

I would second people saying if you were building from scratch, to go with an i5, as I've used both FX and Intel in recent years (see the "Blue" rig in my sig).

Sorry, but Intel is so far ahead of Vishera in single thread it's ridiculous at this point, with even Haswell being twice as fast single thread as FX in some scenarios. This makes a HUGE difference in gaming, it cannot be understated, especially in things like minimum frame rates.

As far as GPU, it depends on how much you want to spend, as there's many options presently...

used 970
used or new 980ti (~$400... a steal!)
1070 (if you can find one and not get ripped off)
used 390X/290X (cheaper but power hungry)
RX 480 (wait for Aftermarket cards)

...the point being that in your situation, and in 99% of AAA PC games released NOW (such as Doom), you are going to be GPU limited.

The RAM was basically a waste of money unless you have some valid reason to have that much (e.g. virtual machines). My platform is getting older but instead of running 16gb of slower RAM I run 8gb of the fastest RAM I could get at the time (DDR3-2666). Faster RAM = more FPS in gaming. The thing about "upgrading the RAM to make the machine faster" hasn't been true since at least the mid 90s. Nowadays it's more like you need more for professional purposes like VMs, video editing/encoding, Photoshop and so forth.

The motherboard on the other hand was a good upgrade, especially if coming from a 4+1 phase board. So now you can overclock, a good starting point is 4.5ghz, and anything above that is just bonus.

For the cost of that much RAM and the motherboard you probably could have gone to an i5 + cheaper board. Or you could have got a better GPU.

If it were me I would have upgraded the GPU first and left everything else alone. But, it's done, I hope he's happy with it and you're happy with it, keep us updated on if you get a new GPU or not. smile.gif

Again thank you for all the advice. Please keep in mind that we are building from what he has available and what I have bought for him. anything extra we got on those 2 list we will probably sell off and use the money for, as you folks might have already mentioned a better GPU and CPU. If I cant sell it I can use it to upgrade the other computers in the house. For example my son is using an old Acer Veritron with an Intel board and a Q85xx something cpu? I think. He's no gaming phenom, but that works for his Xcom games, World or Warships ( I got to get on that game with both my Dad and son playing, looks pretty cool) and a few others. He's mostly an Xbone player. And frankly as soon as he finishes college I may just kick him out....lol. At this time the only thing we will upgrade is the GPU until we see what Zen brings. We may go up the mountain to see what the promise land offers, but if it's too expensive, like Moses we may not cross over..for bit!

But keep those tips coming. I am spending the time reading up over at the OFFICIAL] FX-8320/FX-8350 Vishera Owners Club forum and other forums. If we are staying with the Vishera I may do some overclocking for fun! The GPU...man I was on the list with Newegg then they took that second load of RX480's and put them into bundles only. So I may have to settle on others Neurotix listed, at least for my Dad since he will be here next week or so.

If I were in your position, I would install everything you've bought so far, make sure it works, then overclock the CPU to a point where you want it. Then let that surprise your dad, and order an aftermarket RX 480 (or 1060 depending on price and performance) once they're available as a "second" surprise. It's not necessarily optimal, but that is definitely the best GPU you'll get around the $200-300 range right now, and should offer 2-3 years of good 1080p gaming.

Like the others said, if you want a decent overclock to play, without too much heat, go to 4.4-4.5. At that clock, even the single core performance of the FX won't be too bad.

See here the 4.4 9370, is 12% slower than i5-2500k in Cinebench singlethreaded:

http://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/compare_cpu-intel_core_i5_2500k-5-vs-amd_fx_9370-227

OK, it's a Sandybridge, not the latest model, but lots of people still run Sandybridge even at stock and play just fine. Plus, if more new games will run on more cores than the usual 2-4, your dad will be OK for quite some time.

Doesn't look too shabby here either:
