First Time O/C'ing FX6300

Thread Starter
I've built a few pc's over the years, but this is my first pc that I've tried to O/C. Before I go any further, please don't tell me what I should have bought. I don't have money just laying around to do whatever with, so I had to carefully plan out what I wanted.
Originally, I had went with an MSI 760GMA-P34(FX). I know it was a bad choice for overclocking, but I cut corners so I could get an aftermarket cooler and an ssd. I recently switched to an ASUS 970 Pro Gaming/Aura. While the RGB SB is an added perk, I was looking more for the VRM heatsink and the SB heatsink. The MSI board also had an out dated bios, while the new one has the UEFI point and click bios.
Before you ask why I didn't go with a 990x or 990fx board, I had already said I'm on a budget. Plus, I'm not looking for an extreme overclock. I was looking to get 4.0-4.5ghz out of it. 4.3 would be a nice balance. I'm not willing to go with liquid cooling just yet. I'm not comfortable with the idea of it leaking and ruining parts that I can't readily replace.
So far I can get it to 4.0 at 29-45c depending on what software you look at. I've used hardware monitor, speedfan, and Asus AI Suite 3. The first two read at 29c @ idle. While AI Suite 3 reads 45c @ idle.
Now to the questions that I have. I'm confused about a couple of things. At stock voltages with all that stuff that everyone say to turn off, I'm currently running at 4.0ghz w/ 1.3v and NB 1.187v. I did Prime for an hour at that setting and it was fine after an hour. Before, I had set it at 1.35v @4.0ghz and NB 1.21v. Prime seemed fine with it. The 1.35v I got from a couple of videos. I then decided to start from the beginning @ stock and just bump the ratio up in x.5 step (17.5=3.5ghz). Once I got to 4.1 the computer would restart itself. I then bumped the voltage up .00625v at a time. I did that twice with no luck. I probably should kept bumping till stable, but I just backed it down to stock voltage and 4.0ghz. I'm confused as to how it's stable atm but was stable at 1.35v as well.
I know some of you will say I should use some other program besides prime, but tbh no one seems to agree on which to use. I just want to know why it's "stable" at the 2 voltages and how much more I should expect out of the cpu with a Hyper TX3, 3x120mm push fans, and 3x120mm pull fans? I do have another fan on the way that will give the Hyper TX3 a second fan. I would also like to know which program I should believe when it comes to temps. I do have all case fans running pretty much at full speed, because I live an a trailer that's surrounded by aluminum siding and roofing making this house an oven this time of the year. Put it this way, an 18,000btu window A/C and a central a/c might bring the ambient temps to about 85 during the day.
On a side note that might be relevant, I have an EVGA 950. I would say it's reference, except being ITX size, and I keep an aggressive fan curve on it which keeps it around 41c on idle. GPU clock is 1025 with a boost of 1200. Stock settings besides fan. I, also, have the GPU temp set as priority @80c.
Any helpful and solid advice/answers will be appreciated. To any flamers, griefers, and trolls: Just know that I'm too old to pay attention to you, so good luck!

Not sure if I understand you correct. But if its stable at 1,3 it sure will be stable at 1.35, unless you are cooking it with the higher voltage.

Try 1.35 @ 4.2 again, but search for a setting in you bios called load line calibration (LLC) or some setting wich minimized v-drop. If you did not know this do a quick search.

You should use CPU-Z to monitor your voltage.
Start with your 1.35 4Ghz that you know is stable. --> Run prime -> monitor the drop in voltage.
If you don't have a LLC option to compensate, compensate with a higher voltage.

Always watch temps! These chips can take a good voltage-beating but really don't like high temps! devil.gif

Try core temp, what temp-reading does that give you?

Also this: try running the GPU-cooler a litte higher RPM, this will lower the ambient temps around the CPU and will help with your overclock wink.gif (Nevermind, i missed your aggressive fan-curve sentence.
I don't know the normal reference idle temp for that card but mine can do 27° idle, 41 is rather hot??

LIke I said, the GPU is stock except for fan speed and setting temp to priority. I'll try an even more aggressive, but it is a small form factor card with only one fan. I do wish it had a blower rather than a fan, but it is what it is. According to Precision X16, the idle temp is sitting about midrange on cool and the hottest it's ever gotten when gaming is about 60c.
I do have an option for LLC. NB options are auto, regular, medium, and high. CPU is all those plus very high (I think). I have a rough idea of what it is, but I read some where that by changing it I can actually raise temp and I don't want higher temps. Will research the LLC options a bit more.
When I said Hardware Monitor I actually meant Core Temp. It reads temp at 29c-34c. Given how hot my house is I believe the 34c is about right. I don't think Asus Suite is correct, idk. Even if 45c was right, from what I've read, it's not a bad idle temp for being air cooled. Prime does peg core temps around 59c on full load according to SpeedFan and CoreTemp.
I'm hoping by adding another fan to the Hyper TX3 my temps will be better. Right now the one fan is sitting on bottom blowing up through the heatsink fins and into 2 of the exhaust fans. Obviously the new fan will be on top blowing in the same direction as 1rst fan. Meaning towards the exhaust fans.
Being on a budget makes me a little over cautious. However, I want to learn other things about a pc besides just putting it together and just running with it.

Forgot to mention that I left the LLC as stock which is auto. I've read a bunch of articles concerning LLC and I can't find 2 out of the bunch that really agree. Since I can't disable it, should I just leave it at auto? Bare in mind that my psu is an EVGA 500w 80+.
Two things to note as well is that my core vid is 1.42 and my vcore is 1.33 even though I set it at 1.30.

Yes it can raise temps a little. But if you finetweak it, it could mean a more stable and a little cooler total system experience.

LLC: counters the v-drop at full or high loads.
It could be that if you use LLC right, you could lower the v-core to 1.35 and it wil stay nicely at 1.35, and give a stable overlock.

First thing to do for now is.
-> start your pc
-> instal CPU-Z (or other v-core monitoring tool.)
-> run prime
-> notice v-core before running prime and while prime is running. Note these two down.

REDO: using other LLC setting till you get the least amount of drop. Beware very high LLC setting could mean it even raises the voltage under full load. So don't make your runs to long, just long enough to learn your LLC settings and their effect on you voltage.

For temps we try to stay below 60 °C (some say 65 core temp, I like to be extra safe and say 60°C core temp.)
Considering these numbers we should be able to make your system run at a stable 4.2 - 4.3. We also could aim for a 65° prime run, because as you already know prime makes these FX ridiculously hotter then any other application you use. Did you already tried cinebench? Maybe we will use that one to fine-tweak your cpu

First, many thanks for taking the time to help me. My second "optional" fan for the Hyper TX3 is supposed to be here today. So, I'm going to wait till I can get that installed before I do anything else. Yes, Prime does make my cpu run pretty hot. At current overclock I saw temps hit 59c in Speedfan and CoreTemp. To recap the setting is CPU 1.3v @ 4.0ghz, NB 1.187v, and LLC @ auto.
I did find out that, for me, turning Cool N Quiet back on isn't an option. I've been playing GTAV with no problems. However, last night I had a google chrome up and an android emulator in the background. All of a sudden it crashed. So I figure the CNC caused the voltage to drop to low and therefore making it crash.
I had no idea that Cinebench could help with overclocking. I do indeed have it, but have only used it for benchmarking GPU. Will have to take a look at the cpu benchmark tool and see what information it gives.
I'm still confused and concerned about the temp difference between Speedfan/Coretemp and Asus Suite 3 (only a 10-15 degree difference). Maybe things will balance out in the end. I, also, have a sinking suspicion that LLC being set at auto may have played apart in the previously mentioned crash and maybe even the temps as well.
In regards to getting the cpu to 4.2-4.3 wouldn't I have to raise the NB volts at some point? Whatever happens I don't want to go back to optimized default settings. I get why the cpu vcore drops to 1.18 on idle but optimized defaults jumps it up to 1.44v @ 4.1ghz which, imo, is to high. Plus, @ idle I've seen the freq/volt jump around too much for my liking.
Anyhoo, I will update once I get that fan installed and have taken some readings. I will probably use both Speedfan and Coretemp just to confirm core temps. Thank you once again! thumb.gif

Update: Still waiting on fan, but pc crashed again even with Cool N Quiet turned off. Maybe it's not so stable at the the current settings. I just reset to optimized defaults until I can get that fan installed.

Okay. Fan came in installation was easy but plugging it in was a pain. My hands are swollen due to some arthritis. Anyways, going to put up a couple of pics with readings for stock voltages.

Adding an extra fan to the Hyper TX3 didn't seem to lower temps any. So now I'm concerned about being able to get past 4.0ghz @ 1.30.

Okay. I ran prime for 10min. During that 10 minutes I didn't see any vdroop. In case you're wondering why I only ran it for 10 minutes, at full load LLC auto puts the vcore to 1.368-1.380v and it hit 59c. I'm going to reboot and set LLC to regular and see what my findings are.

Update:
This is where I am at now.
4.0ghz
cpu 1.368v
NB 1.20v
LLC CPU medium
LLC NB regular
idle temp 30c-37c

Prime ran for an hour with no hiccups, but my vcore did immediately drop to 1.332v and stayed there. Temps hovered around 58-59c while pegging 60c one time.

The reason I set it manually to 1.368 is because once I took LLC off of auto the cpu wasn't stable at anything lower. 1.368 appears to be the stable mark. I would like for it to be a little lower at 4.0ghz. That might involve raising the CPU LLC higher. I'm just not sure about doing that because I do have a 500w power supply. I read that you need a higher wattage psu to do higher LLC's. Anyways, here's a snap shot of current readings.

Do you have turbo disabled?
Yes try to find the best LLC setting so you v-core is the most stable. (Less drop or less raise)

cinebench won't give lots of information except a number that will help you see your gain in overlcocking. It is mostly used as an other way to stresstest your CPU, it also runs a litte cooler compared to prime on an FX.

You could try to raise your temp limit to 65 in prime, in normal everyday use you will never hit that 65. (in a attempt to reach for 4.1 or 4.2.

1..36 could (no gaurantee, every cpu is different) be enough to run 4.1-4.2.

For extra stabilty you could raise CPU/NB voltage one notch, but this will also raise temps.
If you don't raise CPU/NB speed (iirc stock is 2200) it won't need raising.
you could even LOWER your temps if you take your time to finetweak CPU/NB voltage.
--> Put in a stable setting
--> step by step lower the CPU/NB voltage until crash. This will lower powerconsumption and heat.
for example i was able to run my power hungry chip at 1.15 NB voltage, with some luck you could go as low as 1.1. Be aware crashes will occur in finding this sweet spot!

for the CnC thing, it is possible to combine and OC with a stable CnC. But you will need to really get to know you cpu and the voltages per multi,...
For now focus on getting an CnC and turbo disabled 6core at 4.2 Ghz.

Just for the heck of it. Try to boot up with these settings but 4.1 ghz or even 4.2Ghz.
