GTX 970 overclock: increase voltage cause core clock increasing?

At first, sorry for my bad english.

I have an MSI GTX 970 Gaming. Its boost clock is 1316 MHz while gaming without any oc.
If I set core clock +150 MHz and memory clock +400 MHz (without increasing voltage), then core clock will be 1466 MHz, but when gpu-using reaches 99-100%, core clock falls back to 1454 MHz. I think it's throttling, isn't it?

But! If I increase voltage with +25mV, core clock starts on 1479 (more than it could be with the +150), and when gpu-using reaches the 99-100%, core clock falls back to the "right" 1466 MHz.

What can this mean?

Is voltage increasing cause a little clock increasing?

I know that clock increasing sometimes needs some voltage increasing to not throttle. But why does core clock jump to 1479 first, and than falls back to the aimed 1466 (+150) when gpu-using reaches the top? Why don't start at 1466 and hold it constantly?

Yes it is throttling. The 1 step drop (minus 13mhz) is iirc around 55 or 60 °C.
As a little test, put your fans to 100% so it stays under the throttling-trigger-temp and you won't see it drop one step.

When you put more voltage the GPU uses a higher boost-table.

If the card isn't hitting power-, thermal-limit it will also boost higher because it uses a higher boost table.+

Example of a boost table & voltage table from the net:

These two work in tandem, when you put higher voltage you tell the GPU to work in a higher voltage range found in the table, higher P-value (CLK-**). That value is linked to a higher boost value (00-78), hence the higher voltage will increase the core clock.

Also, have a read here and here. Little disclaimer: just reading, don't go flashing your bios like a mad man if you don't know what you are doing and can live with a expensive brick! smile.gif

I fiddled so much with my bios that if i increase the voltage it jumps 100mhz higher in core clock. (From 15** to 16**mhz)

Thanks for your answer!

Anyway I don't know what causes the throttling. I set power limit to 110%, temp limit to 81°C. The card don't reach any of them.

Is throttling a big problem? Some people say that the card should hold the clock stable.

By the way I never noticed any artifacts or crashes (except in Witcher 3, but Witcher 3 is a badly programmed game and does instant crashes at many gamers.

For me the Witcher 3 does not crash.

You can use GPU-Z to see what is causing the throttling.
  • temp: temperature
  • pwr: power usage
  • util: utilization (most of the time a power saving feature)
  • VRel: Voltage limit

Is it bad? No.
It is like a build in protecting for not overheating. Your CPU does it to when it runs to hot,... .
Especially when it is only that one step of 13mhz you won't even notice in your fps or game experience.
btw: 1450 isn't a bad overclock! So if it's stable you could just settle with it and enjoy your card. thumb.gif

@Nightwolf88

Thanks a lot!

I thought that my core clock should be stable like concrete, but your arguments are logical. And I have only one step throttling, just as you said.

I think you have some luck with Witcher 3. I saw many posts and youtube videos about crashes. There can be several causes of the crash.

By the way, I reached 1496 MHz core clock and 4000 MHz memory clock with minimal (+25 mV) voltage increasing.
No artifacts and no crash with 1 hour Crysis 3 (high-very settings), a lot of loops with Unigine Heaven and about 35 min Furmark.
Temp is about 75°C (I know it isn't low but not too high).

So, thank you for your help again.

Np, you're welcome.
I would indeed settle for that nice overclock.

This is your GPU's sweet spot, enjoy it!thumb.gif
You probably will be able to get higher if you get into more advanced tweaking, but that also has a ² of risk involved.
