Unless you are looking for insane fps on first person shooters (in excess of 60 - 65 fps) or will be upgrading to 4K the GTX1070 looks to be the choice for 1440P gaming. The Tech Radar review stated "The GTX 1070 is, by far, Nvidia's king of 1440p gaming. The 8GB of VRAM (all intact), the Titan X level of performance, the price point. It's all there for high-end, 1440p gaming." Source: http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/pc-components/graphics-cards/msi-geforce-gtx-1070-gaming-x-1323106/review/2

1070 will run at about 70 fps avg, based on how well my 980ti handled the new games
1080 will bring that number closer to 90 and I think it would break the 100 fps barrier with OC

for 1440p 60Hz I say wait for custom RX 480s with 6+8-pin and OC
