It is not the R10 tho because they have been using odd numbers so why change to even? R5 R7 R9 R10?? I don't know why they needed the numbers after the R in the first place. R290, R380x... would have worked.
Yeah but they always need more of these letters: FGRSTXZ to be more cool because everyone is using them because people think these letters are more powerful. It's on cars, GPUs, PSUs, ... everywhere really.

I'm super jelly.

AMD's DX11 driver is single threaded. FX 6300 isn't very good at single threaded performance.

I heard that Polaris has changed things with the GCN architecture that makes it incur much less overhead with DX11 than before.

Thy should have Similar TDP and the price tag for 7850 was 250usd

My old 7950's stock clock was 800mhz but was able to OC up to 1300mhz with a waterblock. If the 8+6 pin version can clock to 1600-1700mhz, I may be interested in the RX 480. I'm hoping Vega can double the performance of my R9 290 as 3440x1440 can be crippling for a single GPU.
that is non reference

What's the expectation of vega core count? I've heard 4096..

it should increase since R9 380 vs RX 480 the core count increased

There may be multiple Vegas coming out.

Vega 10 is believed to be 4096 cores (possibly 8 GB of HBM2 with 2 stacks), and Vega 11 to be 6144 (possibly 16 GB of HBM2 with 4 stacks). One important consideration is that Polaris is said to be a refinement of GCN, while Vega is actually a new architecture.

http://www.3dcenter.org/news/wie-amds-radeon-r400-serie-wahrscheinlich-aussieht

We may not see Vega 11 until this time next year though. We're not even sure if Vega 11 exists. There is a medium sized Vega die though for sure. Vega 11, like the Fury X would be a big die and represent the end of the "small die" strategy.

I hope that we do, and that AMD does ship a big die.

Makes me wonder just how much dize size all those things take up. I am really curious now how much actual die space a single core from P10 vs Pascal actually use. I doubt we will ever know though. And too, we have to take into account node differences. ah well.

Not that simple I'm afraid. In the case of AMD, they have used High Density Libraries before. The 290X and the Fury X both had a much higher transistor density than the 7970 and although were smaller in die size compared to big Kepler and big Maxwell, had higher transistor counts.

It's entirely possible that Polaris may not have HDLs (they may not want to risk it on a new process), then on the Vega series, they end up using HDLs aggressively. It's a big unknown at this point.

It could be called the Rturkey 480, what difference does that make?

It's all about the price vs the performance you get at this point.

Actually, another consideration is performance over time, and there AMD has been doing well with their GCN GPUs.

I'll say it again:
  • 7970 has skyrocketed past the GTX 680
  • The 290X has done very well compared to the 780Ti and OG Titan
  • The Fury X has made relative gains compared to the 980Ti, as has the 290X/390X versus the GTX 980

It's especially important in this segment because $200 buyers don't upgrade year over year. They keep their GPUs for years. With Pascal out, I have no doubt the same thing that happened to Kepler vs GCN will now happen to Maxwell vs GCN. Then the same thing will happen to Pascal once Volta comes out.

It becomes even more important if AMD's vision of a DX12 Async Compute centric gaming idea becomes more popular. The Polaris will have a Command Processor + ACEs. Nvidia will not until Volta.

Finally, consider that if you play console ports, they will be optimized around GCN. Wonder why consoles punch somewhat above their weight, despite shipping with crappy hardware? Optimization plays a big role. AMD has been pushing for those to end up on the PC as well.

That doesn't mean Nvidia doesn't have their pluses (they do and we will see them with little Pascal), especially at DX11, but it may make AMD a better long-term investment for a GPU.
