I think if a chip has different amount of CU's they should have different names. Like nvidia has with the GTX 1080 (2560 cuda cores) and GTX 1070 (2048 cuda cores). Would be confusing if they were both named the same wouldn't it headscratch.gif
And what chip exactly has the same CU's?

When they revealed it I thought it to be a placeholder like they aren't sure whether it's R7 or R9.

Will it be like all cards are named RX 460, RX 460X - RX 490 and RX 490X ? headscratch.gif
Who cares about the names lol

RX can also be R10 at least it seems that way to me, roman numeral.

yeah that is an amazing idea and in a few generations we have RXVIII 880

and followed by that we have the RXXX 6969 card and your wife asks you "ARE YOU LOOKING FOR PORN?!?!?" and you say "NAH HONEY I SWEAR THIS IS ONLY A GRAPHICS CARD" ...

I agree. If they called it Rpoo480 it would not change my decision to or not to purchase.

It is not the R10 tho because they have been using odd numbers so why change to even? R5 R7 R9 R10?? I don't know why they needed the numbers after the R in the first place. R290, R380x... would have worked.

EDIT: But yes, 480 is the largest Polaris 10 chip.
how do you know there isnt an extra Polaris SKU?

Like the Full R9 285 GPU was released a year later the Polaris 10 GPU on consoles at 6Tflops can be 2560SP-3072Sp gpu

The 2560 rumor fell out of favor when Lisa Su said the rx480/70/60 was the entire Polaris family.

EDIT: also this "full line" http://www.amd.com/en-us/press-releases/Pages/e3-sneak-peek-2016jun13.aspx all three cards are officially known as rx so unless they change the x to something different for mobile I'd say it doesn't mean anything specific and is just a new naming scheme for the whole series.

EDIT2: source for Radeon Experience http://unlocked.newegg.com/article/hands-amd-rx-460-470-480-graphics-cards

Also, the “RX” name is also new -- it stands for Radeon Experience and is really AMD’s commitment to make gaming their number one priority going forward. As well as try to clear up some of the confusion of previous model names. Less naming confusion is always a good thing

The number in R* was like the number in Intel's i* or AMD's A* or nV's; it just gives the rough position in the product stack. R9 being high end, R7 mid-range, R5 low end, R3 very low end/'essential'. From what I've heard, RX is similar to GTX, and the low end versions will be R 4x0.

At E3, Lisa Su said that the 460, 470, and 480 are the entire desktop Polaris lineup. More importantly, though, there isn't a GPU above the 480; unless there's a Polaris 12, the only possible addition would be a locked-down P11 as RX 450 or something. The 480 is 36 CUs, which is the full Polaris 10 according to AMD's slides.
