Nope. It's an arbitrary difference. What matters is die size and transistor count. If 50 of AMD's cores take up less silicon space than 30 of NVIDIA's, then AMD has the superior architecture (power draw being equal of course).

But AMD has historically been much stronger in compute performance than Nvidia. So perhaps AMD's cores are far stronger, but the geometry processors and rasterizers are much weaker? IDK. Just something I thought of right now thinking about the core count of each of the cards.

Yes, you're right about this trend. It's not that AMD's cores are stronger, it's that they dedicate more relative die space to "stream processing" (AMD's term) when compared to NVIDIA on gaming cards, at least historically. Part of the reason for this is that NVIDIA has a dedicated compute oriented card every generation so they can really focus on only delivering gaming performance on gaming cards while pointing every customer than wants compute to Tesla or the end of generation cut down Tesla (780ti, 980ti, etc).

Polaris 10 is 232mm2 for 2304 cores, and GP104 is 314mm2 for 2560 cores. There is a 128-bit difference in mem controller size, 32 ROP difference, and 40 less TMU. Makes me wonder just how much dize size all those things take up. I am really curious now how much actual die space a single core from P10 vs Pascal actually use. I doubt we will ever know though. And too, we have to take into account node differences. ah well.

the Reference Cooling is so cheap that even lacks of heatpipes (and V.C),it should be bad

There was a tear down of the cooler. If its overclocking to 1400-1500 on reference, this chip runs very cool.
