Vega Performance Target? - Page 2

Big Vega will be HBM2. The Vega release being teased probably has to do with fab for Scorpio and will not have HBM2. Little Vega was already projected, but is a bit farther off and also won't have HBM2. MS is releasing their Scorpio XB1 refresh pretty soon though, and their numbers are pretty much 4x. That's not Polaris, so it's probably a custom stripped Vega. So AMD might have some cut-down little Vega's rolling around from fab for 'RX490" or something towards the end of the year.

Is Vega competing with 1080, do you honestly believe it will surpass it?

I am willing to wait until October for Vega's projected release if it's worth it. 1080ti will be out of my price range. EASILY. So it leaves 1080 and Vega as card choices.

Big Vega will surpass 1080 easy, but it probably won't release until late next year. Who knows what NVIDIA has at that point. AMD is kinda playing their cards really close to the chest.

We DO know from Microsoft, that Little Vega is kinda a beast. Big Vega, with HBM2, who knows?

A Vega chip will release later this year, but it is a result of fab for Scorpio. It might be good or bad. It won't have HBM2 and it won't even be considered proper 'little Vega'. It will probably be stacked at the high 'RX' end. 'RX490' probably. Proper little Vega will release as 5xx or some other nomenclature and we won't see those for more than 6months. I know people think another nomenclature change so quickly is strange, but AMD is shaking the market. Little Vega is coming out soon, and we will definitely get a cut-down Little Vega from Scorpio fab as RX490 or RX495.

Where are people getting that Scorpio will have a "little" Vega? It could just have a slightly custom Polaris 10 at ~1300-1350 MHz and basically be at the 6 TFlops that Microsoft stated for Scorpio.

A week ago I would've said about GTX 1080 +10%.

Now I am not so sure anymore thinking.gif

AMD performance per Unified is not improving with GCN4, specifically Polaris.
So AMD needs to play with Clock Speed. If only Polaris 10 can reach 1.7 GHz, I think RX 480 will be able to trade blow with GTX 1070.
To compete with GTX 1080, AMD have to achieve what Nvidia can do with GTX 1080, breaking 2 GHz barrier.
With the rumor of Vega 10 will have 4096 GCN Cores, that means we will see Fury X as the baseline. If AMD can deliver 2 GHz or at least something closer to that, Vega 10 might be able to go neck to neck with GTX 1080 or even surpass it.

Per shader performance is up at least ~5.8%, likely more due to other limitations of spec cuts vs Hawaii (less shaders, less rops, less tmus, lower bandwith despite compression tech ~51GB/s less than 390x). So the bolded state is wrong.

As for competing with Nvidia in flat out performance, GCN scales better than Pascal with clock speed, so AMD cards do not have to clock as high. The problem is AMD still needs Vega to be able to clock considerably higher to have a 490 part and gen 2 Fury to properly compete with the 1080 and 1080ti/Titan ABCDEFG
