I just assume hackers are not going to the trouble of hacking their way into activating the camera on linux Especially on a laptop that is not used a lot anyway. I am just not that interesting.

I used to do that but was bothered by the same fracking question: "why do you put a tape there? U dont want some one seeing you masterbatingz?"

I would file this under something the average person doesn't have to worry about, but someone like zuckerberg might. The effort to get in to your webcam is probably not worth it.

Rootkits don't take a whole lot of effort. You just throw the bait out there and see what bites, then reel it in when you get a nibble.

Use a black tape and cut precisely along the glass edge then.

Not quite. There are quite a few reasons why so called "common people" should take precautions. As the NY Times article points out, from voyeurism to extortion.

Among the relevant stories: http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/03/rat-breeders-meet-the-men-who-spy-on-women-through-their-webcams/

Edit: for those who saw the thread yesterday, it's been updated with more sources and the NY Times article from today, which is more complete, was made the primary source.

I'm still waiting for a good reason to connect the free webcam I got in 2008. Those that have seen my face live, tell me to just keep waiting.

you know, I was thinking about doing the same thing a few years ago, but I quickly realized they wouldn't get anything interesting anyway, so whatever...
still, physical switches for cameras and microphones would be cheap to implement, they should be a thing.
