If you go to his source. This is the EU antitrust fine.

i.e 1.06 billion euro's = 1.2 billion usd. AMD gets none of this. This is the antitrust fine.

"The court cases were settled in 2009, in the US Intel agreed to pay AMD $1.25 billion USD to settle all outstanding court cases in the US and several overseas."

"In the UK there was a seperate court case which also went against Intel, the courts there requiring Intel to pay AMD €1.06bn, the largest ever fine in the UK. Since then Intel has been fighting tooth and nail to find a way not to pay the fine and while they have not succeeded in their legal battle they have succeeded in not paying AMD one single cent. "

Intel already paid the 1.25 billion dollar lawsuit because that was a settlement and it was acceptable to them(they got away cheap). Both parties settled on this amount and it's why global foundries exists today. In addition to the 1.25billion dollars, AMD was allowed to sell it's foundary business and wasn't required to produce their CPU's to keep their x86 licence.

This was one of the sources for the PCper article.

http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2462397/intel-is-still-fighting-that-eur106bn-amd-antitrust-fine-from-six-years-ago

1.06 million euros = 1.45 billion(past exchange rate) = 1.2 billion(todays exchange rate). The pcper author is a goof and didn't read his own source or wrote an article and purposely mistaken the details to get more hits. Even the inquirer got it right and knows this is an antitrust fine, not a lawsuit verdict where AMD is entitled to 1.2 billion dollars.

Come on people, show that you atleast read these articles with some knowledge.

There is two separate ones.

There is one in the USA
And one in the EU

The EU one was brought on by complaints from AMD, while the US one was a direct lawsuit by AMD. The EU payout goes to the EU, while the US one goes to AMD.

Antitrust lawsuit fines go to the government. Hence why it's called a fine.

This isn't like a normal private lawsuit, where the funds go to the one damaged. So this wouldn't really help AMD. Look up the original case, and you see, the funds go to the EU.

The author of the article, really needs to get his fact straight before writing a sensationalist headline that is incorrect.

It's why some see the EU antitrust as often a cashgrab.

Why would AMD be involved in the court process then? Aren't they the damaged part? How is it that intel doesn't have any responsibility about it?

Do they ever calculate the interest rates for these cases?

Not quite. Most of continental Europe has a legal system based on Roman law. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_law_(legal_system)

Except the UK/England, they use common law, like the US. Just as I said.

If I were to nitpick, this just sounds like good business, "If you use us exclusively we give you a good deal, if you offer a competitors product you pay our regular price." If AMD had an exclusive deal with a company (such as consoles) everybody would be praising them on a good move. The only reason Intel gets heat is because they can afford to lose customers if they refuse the deal.
