Need help figuring out a possible cpu instability

post #1 of 6
Thread Starter
I have a 4790k that has been running for quite some time now at 4.7ghz @1.3v. It has been rock solid with no freezes and crashes EVER.

Over the last week I started using for the first time Shadowplay and would sometimes get random bsod with whea uncorrectable error and code 124.

I figured it was a driver issue, redid the drivers and still crashed. So I thought maybe Shadowplay was fubar. I then downloaded and started using OBS. When I use OBS with the x264 encoder (uses cpu) I will get random bsod. However when I use the nvidia encoder I do not crash.

I was thinking I would try upping the vcore to like 1.32-1.33 and see if I am still crashing or I was going to lower the clock to 4.5.

How much percentage wise decrease in performance is going from 4.7 to 4.5?

Also what do you guys think of the situation?

Probably barely anything, 200mhz might only really point out in CPU benchmarks but for recording? Nah, my 4770k @ 4.5 (1.235v atm) records/streams fine at 60fps/1080p. But if you really want to know the exact difference, give me a benchmark for CPU and I can run a few scores on my 4770k.

I'd say try raising the voltage, try up to about 1.35 max, if you get it stable awesome, if not drop to 4.6 and see if you can stabilize that, 4.7 to 4.5 really isnt that big of a difference, i dont have specific numbers for you but i'd say around 5 percent give or take depending mainly only noticeable in cpu benchmarks. it seems like the 4.7 isnt fully stable or there is a instability somewhere else, though normally the cpu is the culprit. Play around with it a bit and see what you can do, will take nothing more than a little bit of time. hope this helps a bit.

Ok I am going to test increased voltage. Will return with results.

@InverseTundra

Sounds good, just make sure your temps are in check, if you hold stable awesome. Happy to have helped a bit haha.
