Sounds like a good idea but I'd rather keep it simple for now. Thank you.

True but that doesn't equal a big boost in fps in most games and a z170 motherboard might not support anything past Kaby Lake. At least the x99 supports powerful 8-10 core CPU's and I'm guessing Skylake-E?

Faster ram? X99 is quad vs dual. 6800k can run 3300+ ram

Well I went from 4.8 ghz 2600k to 4.4 ghz 6800k and huge jump in game performance with 980 ti sli

3467 pins and 6channel memory for Skylake-E/X

Surprisingly games are showing significant gains with increasing ram speed on Skylake. I'll see if I can find the test which ran 2400-4000 the difference between low and high was nearly 10FPS at 1440p which is quite substantial. You are correct though. Z170 will not support anything past Kaby lake. X99 however will not support Skylake I do not believe since z97 made the jump to z170 between Maxwell and Skylake. I'm assuming x99 will follow suite since most chipsets are limited to two generations.

That's the techspot article
It's not certain yet for the Z170

Sandybridge to Broadwell-E and nearly 30% increase shouldn't be surprising though.

Both x99/z170 motherboards I'm interested in will run my 16GB DDR4 3200 just fine. Difference would be that x99 would run quad channel.

Seems like x99 motherboards won't be compatible with Skylake-E so there's no future and the z170 will only be compatible with Kaby Lake and not Canonlake. Hard choice for me...

I hate having to choose between these two procs. I wish one had a clear advantage over the other. The prices are really similar so this decision is difficult. I need to order something as of yesterday!

Just get 6800k if you can stomach the extra cost. The physics score on the bwe is really great compared to hwe and can support high speed ddr4 in quad channel and good for sli if you plan to sli. It will also be more future proof with all the features of the new x99 boards. The difference in gaming btw the two I think is a lot smaller than what people make it out to be unless you get a gold 6700k that overclocks close to 5ghz

If you need to save money and have no use for two extra cores for productivity then go 6700k but 6800k will be more stable multitasking with extra cores
