cant get stable connection with external harddrive

Thread Starter
Hi,

I got some weird issue with my external harddrive.

I got it plugged into a USB 3.0 Hub, that in turn is plugged into a 5M extension. (Hub has own 5v power supply)

I just received a 5m active extension, to try with that, but got same/worse issues with that one.

If I connect the Extension to a USB 2.0 port on my PC, the hub and ext HDD works with no problem.
If I connect the harddrive to the passiv extension and usb 3.0 port, it works no problem
If I connect the harddrive to the USB 3.0 hub, and the hub to the passive cable, I am able to browse the drive, but when writing to it, it randomly disconnects.
If I connect the harddrive to the active extension and usb 3.0 port, I get issues. (USB 3.0 memory stick works)
If I connect the harddrive to the USB 3.0 hub, and the hub to the active cable, same issue as with only active cable.
If I connect the HUB to the passiv or active extension to a USB 3.0 port, and use a USB 2.0 cable to the HDD, it works (at slower speed)

I bought an active cable, in hopes it would make me able to us the HUB Properly, but nope.

Anyone got any tips to what I can do get a stable connection?

when using external hard disk drives you really should directly connect it to the pc using the cable that came with it.

That, or get a good quality longer cable.

Is your external HDD using a separate power supply?
