[PC World] Windows 10 licence Microsoft ID association

http://www.pcworld.com/article/3087589/windows/microsoft-helps-troubleshoot-windows-10-activation-with-new-beta.html
Quote:
Right now, it's available only to members of the Windows Insider Program's Fast ring, who got a new beta build of Windows 10 to play around with on Wednesday. Microsoft hasn’t said that the tool will be available to everyone with the forthcoming Anniversary Update, but that seems likely.

Using the Activation Troubleshooter, users can associate a digital Windows 10 license with their Microsoft account. After that, they can change out hardware on their PC and re-activate Windows with the license that they associated with their account.
Quote:
In a reference document, Microsoft said that there would be a limit to the number of times that users can re-activate a device using the same license, but didn't say what the limit is. A representative for Microsoft didn't respond to a request for comment by press time.

Not sure how I feel about this part. Will deactivating the previous Windows 10 installation decrease the "count"? Or is it a hard limit?

For realz...?

this would be lovely seeing as how I just bought a new motherboard... actually I bought 1 installed windows and then returned it and bought a different board.... the activate windows watermark is boring. (i know i can call and change it but still)
I recently had to change out my motherboard and did a fresh install of W10. The board was the same model, but a replacement and it activated automatically.
I replaced my motherboard and it activated fine. This was back in November.
For clarification I bought a different model board and yeah I have to specifically call to have MS activate it
post #7 of 26
i forgot windows even had licenses wink.gif
post #8 of 26
A limit huh? So much for being there for the customer.

I've been using the same Windows 7 license forever. I reformatted 3 of my laptops and 4 of my desktops with the same key. My desktop is frequently in use at the same time one of my other two laptops are.

So, I would say they've been fairly reasonable about licenses so far. For me, at least, they haven't interfered by trying to force me to purchase more than one license for more than one system. If it really worked the way that say it does right now, it'd be outrageous anyway.

A step in this new direction is probably going to be a step away from the old direction. Or, maybe they'll just continue to enforce their policies loosely. I doubt that, though, considering this new plan won't cost people money and will lure them into making an MSid account and very expressly taking ownership of an operating system. It's all so subtle, nowadays. "Sure, you can reformat your own system but if you want to replace hardware you need to make an account or buy a new key. Oh you're logging in already? Well it's been all of 30 seconds so we need an alternative email to verify you." Some time goes by, and after that it's like, "oh, I know we have an alternate email for verification but that's not sufficient anymore and we suddenly need your phone number." Meanwhile, they're telling their metadata customers about how reliable their meta dossiers are because they're tied to your OS, phone, multiple emails, through which partners confirm your address, gender, religious beliefs. The future is going to be pretty upset with us for trading all this for free garbage.

A few years go by, and every second login becomes "We were unable to verify your Windows 11 key with our server, please wait a few minutes and try again."

A few more years go by, and you heavily suspect that they're intentionally keeping the servers down because the Windows 12 servers run like lightning and the Windows 11 servers won't connect.

This cynicism has been brought to you by Mookstah Inc. The best in witnessing the ruination of computers and internet since 1999.

I will be using linux long before this happens... thumb.gif And if it comes to this even if they disable the servers(and not just for that future version of winspy) there will be one other way:

(BTW, before someone asks. I dont use this "other way" currently wink.gif .)

People always find a way to cause a major pain in the butt for the big corps... biggrin.gif And i would bet that this version will be stripped of all the telemetry crap.
