Alright, so here's some quick and dirty testing. All games were ultra default settings. 1310/2150 and 1.075V/.925V. I really wanted to try RoTR, but Fraps was being useless. I also wanted to do Crysis 2, but my save games are lost and I don't particularly feel like playing from the beginning to a point I feel would be beneficial to bench. Each one has a different amount of time depending on the usable data I got. I can do averages and minimums, but really don't feel like it tongue.gif I feel like a chart is a better indication of what you'll experience anyways.

CS:GO (Overpass)

Doom (UAC)

Fallout 4 (Wasteland Wandering/Shooting Super Mutants)

Farcry 3 (Random Camp Shootout)

Metro LL (Surface Contact w/ Child Whatever it Is)

Sniper Elite 3 (Siwa Oasis)

I'd like to talk about Metro LL and I left that data in there on purpose to show it's not all roses, unicorns, and sunshine, that point where it just flops to 20FPS is where you're chasing the little mutant sucker around the surface through those trenches. I don't know why, but the GPU really seemed to struggle with that (and throttle hard, you can see it on the GPU-Z graph). The shootout before that was fine, but after... ugh, I can feel the frames tank during the trench run before even looking at the data. I even bumped the voltages a titch (you can see by the 1.0875) and it didn't help, so it wasn't a stability issue.

Nice results. A note on M:LL, I don't think that game runs particularly well on any modern GPU, my 970 struggled with bad frame dips, my Fury X did, my Fury did, and I'm sure the 1080 I have atm would see some seriously bad frame dips. That game seems to still been an issue for any card depending on the scene; mostly with terribly low dips on the min fps.

Do you have Crysis 3? I'm curious to see how other more strenuous games effect temps, wattage and clock speeds.

Nope, the only modern EA title I 'own' is BF4. I stopped buying from EA after Origin, then have continued to not buy after the BF launch fiasco and continued bugs for over a year, even though I really wanted to try the new ME.

I was miffed enough about having to install UPlay for Farcry. I think that's why I didn't buy 4.

All very good choices, pretty much made the same exact decision. Ubisoft made the decision for me by constantly releasing buggy games and ruining the Far Cry series rolleyes.gif; quite bored of yearly cash grab series from both companies.

Yeah, that's why I wanted to do Crysis 2, which is still very demanding. I thought about doing Alien Isolation and Outlast... or something.

I also don't own GTA:V so don't ask tongue.gif

I suppose I could run RoTR's benchmark, but it's not the same and it's really annoying that Fraps won't overlay into it and work at all.

Throw some more games out, I've got something like 160+ in my library.

Edit: I suppose I can give RoTR another try and maybe the original Crysis. Could also probably pick up Ark: SE. It's only $15 and I've heard that's pretty demanding. Maybe Arma as well... Keep in mind my 8350 btw. I'm more likely to be CPU limited then GPU, although with a single 480 I couldn't imagine hitting that point, but... you never know.

ADD:

How about Ark, Alien, (try again) RoTR, BioShock:I, and maybe 2 other games you guys want. If I have to buy them, I'd prefer <$20 of games I might play. So no Arma III, JC, or GTA. I'd also prefer games I'll actually play, so no Batman or Project Cars... please, unless you really want to see it and think it would be informative.

Could any RX480 owner do a couple tests with stock clocks (and optionally, decreased core voltage) and increased power limiter (+50%) with the SteamVR Performance Test? I'm still trying to determine if this card is better than an R9 390 there, without power and thermal throttling interfering.

With an XFX R9 390 on an Intel i5 3550 CPU I used to score about 7.0 with stock clocks (1015 MHz core) and ~7.7-7.8 with about a 120 MHz core overclock.

Take it with a grain of salt as an 8350 owner...

A single OCed 290X of mine scored 7.7

On both tests, frames were CPU bound...

Thanks for the test. It looks like it might not be as fast as the R9 390 at the resolutions+framerate required for VR gaming.
As far as I'm aware of the stock R9 290X should be about on par with the stock R9 390.
The R9 390X is supposed to be able to score about 7.8 with default clocks and no CPU-bound frames.

I've seen screenshots from other people with last generation i7 CPU scoring 6.8 with default clocks/default power limiter and the RX480.
