I recouped my costs with Litecoin already. In fact, before that as I bought the Litecoin hardware with money made from Bitcoin. Either way, hardware is not a big outlay as you only need to cover around 30 % of it to ROI - after that you can sell the hardware for 70 % of retail and you're at 100 % ROI.

Let me further expand on that and say there was no initial cost with Bitcoin as I already had the hardware for gaming and overclocking.
