4930k or E5 2670

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

looking to upgrade my current cpu which is an i7 950 as it takes too much time to encode blurays and it will probably bottleneck my next GPU GTX 1070, however I can't decide between 2 CPUs and I'd would like to know what you think.
I can get a Xeon E5 2670 (8 cores 2.6 GHz) along with an asus sabertooth x79 motherboard for 290 euros or an i7 4930k (6 cores 3.4GHz) with the same motherboard for 390 euros.
Purpose-built : encoding,gaming, plex server.
Regarding my budget, I don't have one in mind but I don't want to spend much money, that's why I want to buy used CPUs.
If you can find better deals than these 2 CPUs, please let me know.

Thanks

The E5-2670 runs at 3GHz continuous turbo for all cores. I don't have a 4930 to know what it's stock multipliers are.

Obviously the E5-2670 would be better for encoding unless you overclocked the 4930 to an amount greater than the difference in number of cores.

The 4930 would be better for gaming because it's cores are running faster.

4930k all the way. For both multi and single threaded.

The 2670 is getting slow for gaming at the present and going forward.

Depends if the extra speed is worth 100 EUR to you.
It really depends on if the OP is gonna overclock

Well, if there's a significant fps difference between these 2 chips if I overclock the i7 4930k then it's a no-brainer.
As far as I know, Xeons can't be overclocked right ?

The multiplier is locked on the 2670 and the base clock can't be raised enough to matter. Overclocking the 4930 will give you way more single core performance than the 2670 and slightly more all cores performance if you clock it high enough.

Simple math wise without taking other factors into consideration, the 4930 would have to be at 4GHz to match the 2670 at 3GHz for all cores performance, and as a bonus the per core performance will be 4/3 so that will help with games.

If you measure CPU performance in "FPS" you should probably get the 4930 as it's intended market is more geared towards that

That one can't, but 16xx Xeons actually can.

They're a bit harder to find, but you should still look for some E5-16xx Xeons wherever you're buying from.

The E5-1680v2 can OC. Hard to find and its double the price of 4930k..
