Do MBP mid 2014 only support apples own ssd's?

Thread Starter
So i bought a used MBP, but it only has 128GB flash, and the price for an apple 256GB is insane!

Can i use a third party m2 ssd from sandisk dor example? Or do i HAVE to buy one specifically from apple?

And what speeds can i gain if i buy an external thunderbolt ssd?

The 2014 ssd is NOT an m.2 ssd.

You basically have to use apple's own hard drives, or a very specific 3rd party drive that costs about the same.

OWC has a 480 gig for 350.

Still extremely pricey, but it is far more palatable. https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ssd/owc/macbook-air/2013-2014-2015

The other option is there seems to be a M.2 to NGFF adapter which will allow you to use any old M.2 SSD (I would only stick to sata based m.2 ssds)

http://eshop.sintech.cn/ngff-m2-pcie-ssd-card-as-2013-2014-2015-macbook-ssd-p-1139.html

I have absolutely no idea how well this works, so when you buy it, assume that it will not work right.

So where can i get one such adapter for mac to use a regular m2?

Yep, it's by far the worst aspect of owning an Apple. I'd follow Angel's suggestion to use OWC if you're looking to spend as little as possible.

I actually found out that the computer store here sells 1 model of the pro with a hdd and disk drive! biggrin.gif

So when i get my tax return, i will get that one, take out the hdd and attach a 2TB SSHD in it and finally use it for my video editing again as the last editing i did laid an "untitled" egg of 32GB which easily ate the 120GB ssd up :S
