ok so i have a chance to snag an intel xeon x5687 CPU for cheap im talking 50$ and i need to know if the multiplier on this cpu is locked or unlocked? reason im asking is my mobo/bios doesnt allow me to adjust the BLCK of the cpu so i can only increase or decrease the multiplier is this cpu unlocked
It should be a locked multiplier, but unlocked bclk if the motherboard supports it. Westmere clocks stupidly high - 200MHz, up from 133MHz, is feasible - so you should get some nice speeds out of it.
Actually, I don't think LGA-1366 has an unlocked multiplier at all. What socket does your system use?
EDIT: Just kidding, I'm an idiot. Some of the i7s have unlocked multipliers. However, assuming you need ECC or any fancy workstationy features, they won't necessarily be supported.
its an HP Z400 socket LGA1366 socket B right now i have a xeon w3565 which has a locked multi and my hp z400 has bios options locked so i wanted to use intel XTU utility to overclock but cant unless my cpu has an unlocked multi
that sux guess ill have to save up for a w3680 which is unlocked
