gtx 1070 or gtx 1080 for 1080p

Thread Starter
Currently have gtx 780ti and a 144hz/1ms monitor. I'm fine with 1080p gaming and appreciate 1ms response. Perhaps I'll get a 1440p/ips/1ms if something like that comes out, or a 1440p/1ms when the failure rate isn't so high; however right now I am good with 1080p.

I play mainly FPS games and am looking forward to BF1. I'd like to play future fps games on max with high and steady frame rates and I was wondering if the gtx 1070 would suffice for several years on a 1080p monitor.

Thanks.

Asking for a recommendation is rough when you aren't sure if you are going 1440p or staying 1080p. (144Hz for both)

fair enough. I'll retract what I said about 1440p, and stick with 1080p in the future to come

For 1080p the 1070 would be more than enough. At 1440p my 980 Ti gets 100-120 FPS in BF4, and i can't see BF1 being that much more intensive. Take into account that you are rendering about half as many pixels and vuala. (Keep in mind the 1070 is like 3% faster) If BF1 is say, lets guess, 20% less FPS because of the better graphics then that'd put a 980 Ti / 1070 at 80-90 FPS at 1440P, or 140-150+ for 1080p i would imagine. I wouldn't value reviews much, but this video is a pretty good idea of where to expect performance of a 1070 if you equate it to roughly a Titan X:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhAXt-b8H9o
(Keep in mind that this video is stock, so when i get 250 Mhz more out of my 980 Ti i get 25% more FPS.)

If you are staying 1080p i would stick out the 780 Ti a bit longer, but i'm getting the feeling you are feeling the upgrade itch, and want to buy something. Nothing wrong with that smile.gif

Sorry for the double post. I was just walking around thinking about the numbers. At 1080p you might be around 110-120 FPS with the 1070, so not a hard 144hz cap, but pretty respectable. The 1080 would net you another 20-25% on top of that, and put you at that cap, but at $220 more i'm not sure its worth it at the moment. So you'd get 132-144 FPS with the 1080 (General math), but at the cost of an additional $220, but 20%.

(Keep in mind both would be very playable. Anything over 90 FPS for me is just gravy, and i hardly notice it.)

Whatever you choose to do, try to wait it out a month or 2, since BF1 is a few months out. This will allow the cards to come into stock, and might save you $50-$75.

also you should consider a used 980ti, with all the pros and cons...

you can get a used 980ti cheaper than 1070 now, and it's just as fast. but how's that gonna look like in q3-4 nobody knows. Nvidia will be optimizing drivers for Pascal, and that includes optimizing game-ready drivers. By the end of 2016, 980Ti might be where it is now, on par with 1070, or be matched by RX 480 just as well. And when you wanna sell that to upgrade to 1080 when the prices are finally normal you might find nobody that is willing to buy that 980Ti from you.

GTX 1080 or go home...if you can find one.
