RAM suddenly only showing 8gb (instead of 16gb) and coming up in single channel?

Hey guys, my 16gb Crucial Ballistix DDR4 2400MHz memory has JUST suddenly started showing 8gb total after checking task manager.BIOS shows 8gb aswell and CPUz shows 16gb but says single channel mode.

I opened the PC up yesterday and installed a H105 cpu cooler and a gtx1080 but never touched the RAM. Can I get some advice?

Try re seating the ram first of all... I know you didn't touch it, but computers can be fickle.

If that doesn't work try one stick at a time, if you don't boot with one of them in its likely dead and time for RMA.

But if it boots with two time to run ramtest or something similar to figure out if there is problems with one of the sticks..
And once again possibly time for RMA.. lol

Good luck man probably more stuff that can be done but they are the simplest options.

Edit: Also if it doesn't boot with one of the sticks be sure to test it in the other slot, could possibly be a dead ram channel happened to my last asus board.

Thank you sir. I actually just went into restarted into BIOS right now and put the DRAM profile on "XMP" instead of "AUTO" and now 16gb is showing in Windows and it says "dual channel" in CPU-z.

I'm really confused because I put it on "AUTO" when overclocking my cpu (5820k) a few weeks ago to isolate CPU stability and I could have sworn it was showing 16gb in "AUTO" mode and I don't think I ever had a PC that made me use "XMP" to show properly RAM GB? I'm confused right now....

Who knows what AUTO had everything set to, on boot the system will drop one of the memory channels if it fails the boot up checks.

XMP is the recommended fastest settings set by the manufacturer, usually people worry when it doesn't work with those, so I would be happy now. smile.gif

It is odd that Auto didn't work though, maybe it needs the extra voltage XMP usually sets.

Might want to check the cpu as well, maybe when installing the h105 you moved your cpu slightly out of place? I know that with lga sockets sometimes if the pins are not aligned right to the cpu it can cause ram to not work right, maybe try reseating your cpu and cooler...

Edit sorry didnt realize you fixed it

Reseat your CPU in the socket& remount your heatsink/waterblock. I had the same issue, dead dimm slot, and the cpu was not making a good contact on every single pin in my case so reseating it fixed the issue. Worth a shot, takes all but 10-20 minutes, saved me a lot of hassle & an RMA

Whoa there, If you read up you can see I fixed it simply by turning on XMP man.

You might want to slow -down before advising people to reseat CPU or remount CPU coole when there are way way way way simpler fixes on there! (like going into bios and clicking XMP!)

thanks though.
