I don't think it's intentional gimping, I think Nvidia just switches their focus to the new cards and stop caring about making drivers that work well with both new and old.

And if it's really medium settings, it says more about the driver than about the card itself... Due to CPU overhead.

Don't jump to conclusions.

exactly, this puts the RX 480 right where AMD and everyone said it would be ...on par with a GTX 980...

That makes sense and I agree with you there, they have most of their customers on an aggressive upgrade cycle which they don't even question generally, so it works for them as a company. Loyal minions are easily led.

Don't bother your self for people like chev and ileak, for them the 480 is stillborn whatsever you bring ( official reviews of the 970 AMP for exemple ) they will still believe wccf, VC or even semiaccurate if they were bashing the poor thing rolleyes.gif

So much fail.

No wonder why Raja and AMD used AoTS as marketing that 480 CF will equal a 1080. Its a game where AMD does better.

Now we see the other games where neither AMD nor Nvidia have the upper hand and the result is equal with 970.

Man how disappointing
Did you even look at these alleged benches the 970 is OCed.

OC room is also irrelevant for our purposes of comparison

Edit: bad math at 5am
Majority is still on 1080P neither cards offer playable performance with a single card on 4K UHD resolutions. And OC room is obviously important as it would simply widen the gap by a whole lot the 390x would gain next to nothing while the GTX980 surges. All I'm arguing is that the GTX980 is the better performer.

The 390x may eventually age into something that has higher performance than the GTX980 at stock at least.

what they do is simply not optimize the older generation for newer games, they don't actually disable or slow them. NVIDIA GPU's are heavily reliant on software for just about everything. That's why a game ready driver is absolutely needed for all major releases. They will simply optimize pascal cards further down the line and leave maxwell optimization in its current state. On the red side GCN may have long legs but it's partially due to all the rebranding. Sure it's better for certain functions that newer games are using due to console parity but if AMD was having a new chip every time they'd have left some in the dust as well.

This particular Zotac GTC 970 AMP is OC-ed to Base: 1228 MHz Boost: 1380 MHz and is equal to a Stock 980
where the stock 970 is 1050Base Clock (MHz) 1178Boost Clock (MHz)

So the stock RX480 is being compared to what is a GTX 980 stock equivalent card not to a 970 stock

It amazes me how half the ppl here on OCN seem to not understand the difference. frown.gif i know i am a new member and it's eye-poking obvious.

"The 1070 is superior going forward due to pre-emption and more vram"

Pre-emption is a worse replacement of async.

Pre-emption is a worse replacement of async.

So the 1070 will be worse than the 980ti in DX12 games, even though they are on par in DX11?

lol AOTS is a benchmark like 3Dmark isn't it?

Played it once refunded it. wink.gif

But anyway I guess DX12 and Async won't be used in any games in the future redface.gif
