Well if you speculate on the rumors AMD was having issues with Polaris 10 silicon; so they did what they had to do: Add more voltage and hope it clocks higher.

Those 800 MHz rumors might have been true, so they simply increased the voltage. Power consumption increase quadratically with voltage increase.

Those types of spikes aren't even visible..............they are sooooooo small lol.

There is a several tiny spikes on the AMD card, but there is actually a larger variance across the whole performance line of the 1080.

There is nothing significant there to take away from either card looking at those graphs.

Both vendors can produce a smooth experience with a single card, has been like this for ages.

This is not caring about performance pet watt is in "omg the card is taking 150w out of wall!!".

It is about the fact that if AMD have worse performance per watt, than a 150 TDP card from AMD, will not perform as good as a 150 TDP card from nvidia on the same level.
For example the 480 is 150 TDP, and it performs a whole lot less than the 1070 which is also a 150 TDP (not out of the wall or performance average in games, but specs, plain specs).
This means that if AMD are a step behind nvidia, a 150 TDP card from AMD will perform somewhere around the 150 TDP from nvidia from previous gen.

That was the point. It is not caring if the card is running 5 hours or how much it cost to run it. It is about position of performance when speculating the actual card performance.

Actually, what he said was that the RX 480 TDP design is for max. 150 Watt, which doesn't mean that the card will draw 150 Watt, but ~110 Watt (?). And the max. TDP design of the 1070 is 225 Watt (8 pin connector), but NVidia says the card is normally operating @ 150 Watt (power target and the resulting limitation, which can be overcome by oc'ing).

What you do is mixing the AMD type of TDP definition and NVidia type of definition. The one is speaking about the max. wattage based on the design, the other is speaking about the normally seen consumption.

I just don't get some peoples excitement over performance per watt - i guess faced with a lack of real tangible benefits it comes up again and again, you save a few $$ per year on your power bill if that. Seriously it never used to matter when video cards consumed more power than now and it will matter even less in the next node of gpus . Its also relative to your gaming hours and the games you play also , if you vsync you will save further power also. GPUs use a fraction of their max TPU when idling.

I used to run an extremely power intensive rig for gaming , for about 5 hrs per week under serious load, did it impact my power bill , not really. Unless you are gaming serous hours its negligible.

Will people break into riots when there are 10watt differences at 7nm ? some will have nothing better to think about i guess .

I don't care about small differences in performance per watt. However in this case it's not a small difference. The RX-480 and the GTX 1070 have the same TDP. Actual power consumption will be a bit different, but still.

RX-480- mainstream GTX 1070- next gen mid range., The AMD competitor for the 1070 will consume more power. Also means the the RX-480 will be competing with the GTX 1080 on the mobile market. the GTX-1080 blows it away...

Also why is the GTX 1080 reaching beyond 2ghz on little over 1.0 volts. The RX-480 needs 1.15 volts to be stable at its 1266mhz boost clock. Something ain't right with it.

Sure AMD can price their cards lower, but ultimately they are behind again.

Of course I'm still going to wait for a consensus from multiple reputable reviews, but it's tough not to be a little let down after all the RX480 hype lately. I wonder how it compares in power consumption to the GTX970.

I'd have to agree... but blame Global Foundries. AMD was showing of Polaris in December... probably hoping for better yields. When that didn't pan out, "just increase the voltage and sell it for $200."
