Since the 1060 is still only rumoured, I'm sure your crystal ball told you that.

But if the 1060 is running at 100-120 TDP, it might give similar or a bit better performance as the 480 if you stay with the current performance/watt positions or 20-25%. The old 960 was a 120 TDP card and it performed between the 760 and the 770. With the new leap in performance and the 1070 giving 980 ti performance, I totally expect a 970 or 980 performance out of the 1060, which will rival the 480.

The only issue will be the price. How much it will cost. If it will cost too much, the 480 will sell better. If if priced very similar, it is going to give the 480 a whole lot of problems. It is also depends on timing of release (and right now AMD might have an edge).

Well between the DVI issue, claiming full DX12 support, Premium Founders Edition, and 3.5 GB; nVidia definitely doesn't serve to be taken at face value.

I wonder if nVidia even bothered to improve the gamma LUT in Pascal? They are a GPU company after all. I wonder if more than 2 people at nVidia know anything other than 3D performance.

Guys, this is literally what we all expected. At or slightly above 970 performance, at $200.

The true test will be whether it can overclock. And therefore, the only troubling aspect of this article is the lack of ability to OC very far without system hang.

And we can only see an average OC result by reading many reviews. Therefore, we would be prudent to wait til NDA.

it is the minimum fps we taking here. The drawcalls and cpu overhead that AMD fail to fix to onpar with Nvidia.

Nvidia DX11 is still superior. Now I am here wondering if AMD ever fix their DX11 driver overhead with this new architecture or not.

if they dont, RX480 is merely a card for me to use it to buy those used maxwell card as cheap price like $150 or less.

And yes, I am excited that RX480's performance at these price level. With that I could finally buy a cheap Maxwell.

This is not caring about performance pet watt is in "omg the card is taking 150w out of wall!!".

It is about the fact that if AMD have worse performance per watt, than a 150 TDP card from AMD, will not perform as good as a 150 TDP card from nvidia on the same level.
For example the 480 is 150 TDP, and it performs a whole lot less than the 1070 which is also a 150 TDP (not out of the wall or performance average in games, but specs, plain specs).
This means that if AMD are a step behind nvidia, a 150 TDP card from AMD will perform somewhere around the 150 TDP from nvidia from previous gen.

That was the point. It is not caring if the card is running 5 hours or how much it cost to run it. It is about position of performance when speculating the actual card performance.

So if i get your whole point its that AMD is behind of performance per watt which i don't think anyone disputes - i think they will have superior perf / watt compared to NVs last generation and that's about it. AMD are moving in the right direction however. Vega will push this further than polaris from what Raja has said.

Your other point is a 480 150watt cannot equal a 1070 150 watt due to this which should go without saying due to other factors also such as die size . People don't need to speculate about 480 vs 1070, amd said right from the preview that it was a competitor to the 970/980.

Its also a bit of a moving target , eg in AOTS , Hitman and a few other games AMDs perf/watt is quite a bit higher than say in ROTR , how games shift in the future towards leaning to favour one architecture over the other can change this in time also.

Also why is the GTX 1080 reaching beyond 2ghz on little over 1.0 volts. The RX-480 needs 1.15 volts to be stable at its 1266mhz boost clock. Something ain't right with it.
thats a pretty staggering difference tbh

its because of GCN ? or also 16nm vs 14nm ?

In before the 1060 Founders Edition is present at all websites for 300$ and with an "out of stock" sticker for a month or two after release.

Then you get a used card with little/no warranty.

Lack of future support.

Buying a midrange maxwell card like the 970 right now to play the latest games isn't ideal for me.

I don't know your resolution or games that you play so I can't really say if it's a great idea or not for you though.

Actually tbh, unlike nvidia, AMD are going to be really pushed with polaris.
If they are going to release it for the new macs, for the consoles in APUs, bring out new zen+polaris APUs, and the 480s, and the 470s, and the 460s, they are going to need a huge amount of chips.
Which means global foundries are going to have to work very hard to bring as many chips as possible.

Nvidia don't have the console or mac market on their heads demanding new GPUs (though they have better market on the windows based laptops, but they hadn't show case anything for the mobile yet).

I would imagine the GCN architecture has a lot to do with how much they can actually optimize for DX11. There is a lot of hardware scheduling going on, so CPU optimization simply might not be as effective as nVidia's.

This is why the Polaris DX11 performance will be interesting - min frame rates and frame pacing.
