Pc restarts automatically after certain time

Thread Starter
Hi guys, So my friend is having a issue on his pc, it restarts automatically after certain time like around 1 hour when its idle, and around 5 mins if he starts dota 2.

At first I told him that it would mostly be a faulty smps issue, but it doesnt look like it.

He gave his pc for diagnosis to a computer engineer, he took it for 3 days and checked every component instead of mother(Cause he dint have the same socket motherboard), So his pc still restarted.

So the engineer said that his motherboard is faulty, So my friend ordered a new motherboard, but after connecting everything to new motherboard same problem persists.
Does this mean his processor is faulty?

His pc specs are:
Processor: AMD fx 6300
Motherboard: Gigabyte 970A-DS3P
Graphic card: Zotac gtx 750 ti
Ram: 4gb kingston
Hdd: WD 1TB green
Smps: Corsair vs 450

His processor may be faulty? Or something else? Even im confused as i have an intel build so i cant help him much with it.
Thank you biggrin.gif

Honestly, it sounds like a thermal issue to me. Something is overheating and the thermal kill switch is engaging which triggers the shutdown. Especially if it takes longer at idle and faster under load, this points to heat.

Turn off any overclocks, check fans / pumps depending on cooling setup, watch what the internal temp sensors are doing when you first turn it on and test, try running the tests with case panels off or even with an external fan blowing into the case to see if that helps. If the case panels off or external fan helps, then that also says thermal.

I'd test that route first before replacing parts.

Try to run Prime95, watch temps with HWMonitor/HWInfo and see if the system can handle prime95 load or if it reboots. If it can handle that, then try to run Prime95 + Furmark or 3DMark at the same time and see if the PC reboots.

If the PC reboots soon after you launch these stress tests, you can be reasonably certain that it's the PSU.

If working properly it would run his system fine. Just because it's a crappy PSU does NOT automatically mean it won't work.
