Samsung 950 PRO M.2

Thread Starter
Hi guys

I'm a little bit confused on how these specific drives work on a Z170/H170.

My understanding is that both these boards support 1x16 PCIE for the GPU from the CPU.

My question is does this SSD run off the extra 20 PCIE Lanes provided by the Z170 chipset.

Thanks !

On a Z170/H170 motherboard without a PLX chip, the graphics card will run in x8 speed and the m.2 slot will run in x4. This will be described in the manual of your motherboard.

Im fairly sure on most mobos the m.2 port runs off the 20pcie lanes that go to the chipset rather than the cpu. From there they are sent to the cpu via dmi3.0... Im fairly certain the 16 lanes that are direct to the cpu are intended for graphics cards. I was certain this was the case but dont quote me. Give this a read and then examine your manual and see if you can make sense of it
