[HARDWARECLINIC] RX 490 leak on AMD website? - Page 7

I couldn't care less how the 480 performs, I'm very happy with my 290 at 1130/1350 (overclocking slowly so it doesn't get boring) and will keep it for years to come.

I'm on mobile so not going to search for a link. But it was around the beginning of the year. Whatever big convention type thing goes on around that time? E3 maybe ICR. Iirc he did an interview and it was brought up.

If that's the case (I recall reading that as well but I may be remembering it incorrectly), then Vega 10 must be the largest chip. You can't make a cut down version until you make the full version after all.

Looks like they kept the R7 and R5 naming scheme, but replaced the R9 with RX. Should've just dumped the R5 and R7 name completely.

Unless they've switched Vega from HBM2 to GDDR5X a 490 will NOT be a "cut down" Vega chip.

There's no way to "cut down" a chip that contains 16x the memory bus systems that requires the entirety of it's back-side for the more than one thousand pin connects to an interposer.

The whole speculation that a 232 square millimeter chip is the biggest thing AMD can manufacture on 14nmFFP is exasperatingly stupid. AMD needs to make a 470 square millimeter chip with GDDR5X before they go on to make a HBM2 monstrosity in the 600mm range.

They're selling the Radeon Xpress 480/470/460 right now, these are the LOWER TIER cards of the GCN4.0 models. IE. these are the R7 cards. There will be bigger cards, trust me. Vega isn't a GCN4 card of the Polaris class, it will be something very new.

The "RX 490" is either a misstype or maybe a model they decided not to make.

Be mentally prepared the Ti to be coming in at $800+ and Titan at 1.2K or even more.
This reminds me of the HD2900 release.

I'm willing to bet Vega will be a TSMC or Samsung chip, as oppose to Polaris which are on the GloFlo 14nm FF node.

I remember hearing sometime last year that AMD planned to split up their line between competing fabs. I completely forgot about it, though, until reviews came out. It explains a lot.
Hell, NV might be doing the same. We'll see, once the lower end NV chips start coming down the pipeline. Judging by prices, GloFlo certainly does seem to be charging less per square mm than TSMC. Of course, we've got to factor in NV's premium pricing.. but even when you consider NV's premium pricing, GP204 is priced far less competitively than Polaris 10. I think this might be indicative of the difference in fab costs between TSMC and GF.

We'll see. It's going to be an interesting year, with more fabs competing.

Why is everyone so butthurt at this card? They said it would deliver performance between 970 and 980 and it does exactly that.
What the hell did you people expect out of a $200 part? Titan x performance?

peopled hoped for a positive outlook for things to come. After AMD announced this was a mainstream card, people put their hopes and faith into VEGA.

Now that RX480 is out people are afraid for VEGA not being able to compete with Nvidia since RX480 can barely compete on a new node with Nvidias cards from the previous node.
