I don't think anyone expected that the perf/watt they were targeting was 28nm Maxwell. I find it hard to believe that an architecture that far behind Pascal is going to magically catch up for the Vega/1080 Ti battle.

the AMA that took place like 2 months ago? or was there a new one?

Is the 470 basically just a cut 480 ?

They need over 3X increase on p/w to match GP104 and the smaller dies. This will never going to happen with all the features that GCN requires.

I think we should wait for the 470 and Polaris 11 results before we say omg vega is doomed.

According to ocn amd was doomed with the OG titan. Suddenly hawaii matching GK110 performance and now it matches 980.

The same happened with GM200 and fiji.

let's hope we don't need to wait years for that to happen.

It's good for owning a card if it continues to get better, but it's better for AMD to have a product that is great on release.

Right now Polaris is doomed due to GF 14LPP. The process seems to have major issues with high clocks. AMD are done for this generation. Unless Vega is built at TSMC and makes massive improvements to perf/watt Nvidia will dominate across all price segments.

I didn't say Vega was doomed, but right now if you scale Polaris and Pascal up to 250W, the Polaris is going to get obliterated. So either Vega is going to be another significant step-change in perf/watt, or they are going to have to pull some rabbits out of hats.

The most disappointing part is AMD have not learnt from the past mistakes and continue to overhype a product while delivering underwhelming performance and efficiency. Polaris efficiency gains were exaggerated and finally turned out to be horrible in real world testing.

In general high parallel and complex designs are much easier to scale them up instead of down. Still waiting for the polaris 11 results thumb.gif

Agreed. Polaris is thrashed by Pascal in terms of perf/watt. So imo Nvidia has nothing to worry about. AMD needs to go back to the drawing board and need a post GCN architecture.
