Edit: The ground for the MUN2236T1 bias-resistor transistor is the #5 sense pin (even though it does not state this, that is how the card "senses" the 6-pin is plugged in)

TL&DR :

 

on 12V from MB :

with compatibility mode on , 14 w lower

with compatibility mode off , 10 w lower

 

on 12V from PSU :

with compatibility mode on , 8 w higher

with compatibility mode off , 14 w higher

 

So Driver will pull more power from PSU rather than MB.

This can't be true, i was absolutely certain AMD was out of PCI-SIG spec and according to the experts AMD was going to have no way to fix this!!!! They are supposed to loose PCI-SIG spec certification ASAP!!!! I don't believe these results until Nvidia tests it and Reddit confirms it.

Good to see the fix minimizing the problem as best as possible. It is kind of silly how performance clearly isn't dropping even though compatibility mode reduces the overall power draw. AMD could've avoided this self inflicted wound.

You can totally curb overall power consumption by undervolting. Though, I have a peer saying that the update wasn't beneficial(underclocking fixed his issue in both cases), so I'm guessing finfet variability is the kicker there and overvolting might be necessary for some.
Another similar issue that doesn't register with me is why the fan spins faster after undervolting - the temperature gradient is surely less than the initial.

Overkill, you know? In case someone finds a way to increase power draw by stopping fan and disconnecting pcie 6 pin power while using bubble gum with paper clips to route through PCIE. If anyone can do it that would be MacGyver!

It's to keep power under 150w or lower than 165w i guess.
