I may just be an optometrist but I'm not convinced that the issues the 480 has will substantially affect Vega. I think that Polaris was always designed to be a mobile/super-mainstream part and their attempt to 'performasize' (my new term, patent pending) the 480 effectively is pushing the chip beyond what it's supposed to do within specific efficiency parameters. The PCIe deal and the general Maxwell efficiency is a pretty good indicator, all the more so if the 460 and 470 are substantially better in terms of perf/watt. Vega being designed for performance from the jump will probably end up being better in terms of relative perf/watt simply because it's not going to be shoehorned into an odd niche like the 480 was. They can build the chip for performance, tune it to be as efficient as possible without significant performance loss, and let you decide via overclocking how much efficiency you'd like to lose.

I'm coming at this purely from a performance perspective. Couldn't give two Cesar salads about efficiency (beyond not having the PCIe issue) and what not. I mean, if the 480 is any indication, a 4096 shader Vega part might actually fall slightly short of stock 1080 performance.

But at what price? 550? Not bad.

1080 + Shenanigans = 600+ USD

My point though was more that they tried to squeeze the 480 into a 'performance' role relative to the strength of the chip itself. It doesn't seem designed for that (32 ROP's) and so pushing performance for the sake of efficiency was destined to give us a weaker card than the sum of its parts whilst shaving off some of the efficiency gains to boot. Vega being designed for performance from the ground up will hopefully prevent that from happening. If the 470 is much better in perf/watt it will hint that the 480 was pushed into a role it wasn't necessarily designed to fill. So it's not about efficiency per se, it's about designing a chip for efficiency and squeezing more performance out of it versus designing a chip for performance and then tuning it to be as efficient as possible. Vega being the latter ought to help its performance.

Aren't they improving efficiency with vega over polaris ?
I think that the 480 was a test bed for the vega lile the 750ti was for maxwell .

Vega is also supposed to come with HBM2, so it will be inherently more expensive to produce than GP104. All nVidia has to do is lower 1080's price to $550 and AMD will be in a very bad situation.

I understood what you're trying to say. What I'm saying is, ignoring efficiency for a moment, 480 gives us an idea of how a 2304 shader 32 ROP Polaris card will perform. Assuming Vega is literally double the P10 chip, then it will likely end up around 10% faster than stock 1080, assuming it can keep the same clocks.

Vega will likely have better perf/watt because of using HBM2.

At low load the 6 pin connection has a higher power draw, so its likely that the VRM is 5+1 with the memory and two GPU phases on the 6 pin connection and the other three GPU phases on the PCIe slot.

The PCIe spec specifically states that the PCIe 12v source can NOT be shorted to the 6 pin source. So the phases have to be split.

A load balance circuit is not a short (direct). And you cannot make that assumption from that one graph.

I've been constantly pushing this card since I got it. Zero issues. Currently getting 14.1k fire strike gfx scores @1350 kHz core (@1.125v))/2200 memory (@1.025v) with 50% power level. Changed the TIM out for some gelid extreme and temps with some fan adjustments hover around 65c under constant load. Wattage according to gpuz hasn't reached over 160 once.

Well the wattage in gpuz only measure the gpu, its not accounting for the 40w for the board.

But yeah I havent had any issues either and I am running two of them.
