[Reddit] RX 480 fails PCI-E specification - Page 79

If I had a 480, I'd keep the overspec bios. Chances are it won't hurt a thing and might give the enthusiast a little bump over what the "fix" gives

Agreed. If I had a reference 480 I personally wouldn't even consider the possibility of mobo failure. This issue is so massively overblown, some people act like mobo's are going to be dropping like flies from this. Not happening. Still disappointing that AMD didn't catch this before release as, even though its a total non-issue the bad PR from biased sites and fanboys is going to totally dominate the coverage of what is otherwise a very good card with unprecedented value. AMD has to be absolutely PERFECT in everything they do or they will be buried under an avalanche of bad press from sites who seemingly can't stand that Nvidia even has any competition in the market at all. Its not fair but it is what it is.

*25-50% overdraw.

Read the table at the bottom, 50.07% with slight OC and a little over 25% over spec at stock. Where did that 5% figure come from?

Even if it does kill my MB I would expect compensation if it was caused by the card and move on. I think the major problem here is people that are going to buy this card are like a different level from people here.

Half of me hopes this makes the RX 480 cheaper or even less attractive. That half of me already enjoyed past gpu mistakes. I bought and played with tons of Fermi cards as an example. Mainly because they became cheaper and less popular. Then the other half of me would rather see this rebound so that we have more closer brand competition. So that the market as a whole stays in a better value/performance cycle.

What I AM saying is that the 5% that it runs out of spec is absolutely not going to hurt anything. With OC's you are always subject to possible failure but at stock we are talking about 4W. That's not going to be an issue for anybody.

See below...

79W over 75W spec from the PCIE slot. 5%.

The first AIB cards are expected in about 2 weeks, no one will care about this story once those reviews drop.

Link I posted shows current at stock at 6.96A, 8.29A after overclocking. Spec is 5.5A.

And bear in mind that no motherboard manufacturer is going to be over-engineering the PCI-E slot, it's not something you expect to go outside spec on. Chances are consistent +25%, which you'd expect in a long gaming session, will degrade the board.

Not that it's a massive issue, AMD are releasing a fix from what they've said. Still, people saying it wouldn't do damage if left as is are wrong.
