NV may or may not care about Maxwell in future drivers. They will care about Pascal untill next gen.
Even today, the 1080 is faster at stock, faster OCed, has lower power draw and comes with more VRAM. Really don't see a downside unless you have a 980Ti offered at a much lower price.

Ahhh, my bad. Was somehow thinking about Titan X prices when I typed the above.
It's up to you to decide whether the better hardware is worth the extra cost or not then. "What offers more" is clear.
