This makes me wonder how aibs are going to work out their premium cards. Hiw much higher can you price this budget card. I would definitely like to get a card i can undervolt and slightly overclock. Amd seems to always ship with excessively high voltage.

Yeah I run my 7970 at 1050Mhz at 1.05.

..Thats normal? Of course the power usage is going to sky rocket when you are able to overclock decently. It shouldn't be all that hard to cool with a half decent cooler. I don't think they bios limited the card for power consumption savings but to keep people from melting their cards with the crappy cooler.

They could have called it whatever, but just drop it one down from rx 480 and lower the price a smidge ($175-$199 for example) so that it fits in with the slightly decreased performance at 1-1.1ghz. They would have had more useable dies, the cards efficiency would likely have been much better, and it would have had massive headroom for OC's making people happy.

The AIB cards could be called the rx480 still, and they could cost the same as they are going to in reality, because they supposedly can reach levels of performance that is just unattainable on the reference version due to power bottleneck.

The reference models were tuned to a specific board power, based on the leakage of the ASIC sample involved. So, you could buy three random reference cards and get three completely different VIDs, but they would all be very close on board power/TDP. On top of that, they would generally be set close to optimal votlage for the clocks they were run at.

I had at least on reference 7950 boost that defaulted to 0.98v , while others (with lower leakage) came as high as 1.2v.

Many of the non-reference 7900 series cards were just set to 1.25v. The Sappire Toxics, for example, cam set to 1.25v no matter the ASIC quality/leakage, so most could run with much less voltage.

I am really curious of what kind of system these guys are testing with. I did some base testing before putting this in my son's rig. On a 4790K at reference with 16 gigs of RAM and an SSD on an open bench the total system pull for the 480 at PEAK using Firestrike looped, was 269 watts. This I have found is a decent test for realistic numbers in power and such. The average for total system draw was 251. When I ramped the power limit to max, +50 the peak jumped to 291 with an average of 278. When Id di a 5.5% overclock, fan speed up and power limit at +50 it was pulling 316 at peak and was averaging 298.

I hear reviewers talking about near 300 watts from the wall total system at stock and then + high numbers when power limit was up I have to wonder what the hell kind of system they are using for total power draw.

I prefer when the power draw is compared to another card on the same system. When I compared to a 380X on the same system the 380X was peaking 302 at stock, in other words the 480 was around 115 to 12% less power than a 380X. When compared to a 390 on the same system, the 390 peaked at 384, or the 480 was running with 30% less power at stock.

It's strange that they name the cards after stars now, since the RX 480 card doesn't seem particularly power efficient at all. To me it seems they barely made any progress from the 28nm Fury/Nano cards.
