What is Amd fx 9590 best mbo for gaming

Thread Starter
Hey. Was looking for the best mbo from asrock but not sure what to pick. Gonna use ssd and high end graphic card. Any suggestions. Open to other brands for mbo
post #2 of 31
Asrock makes no motherboard that is suitable for the FX 9590 in my opinion.

Asus Sabretooth or CHV-Z , that's about it.
If you have the option to go with a different FX 8 core, I'd sooner have an 8370 than the 9XXX .

either a crossfire or sabertooth from Asus...

Id avoid Asrocks amd offerings for that chip.

You're not thinking of buying that NEW, are you???

My last fx is a 8350 and asrock mbo. Awsome. I want to build a pc for step daughter. Her bf is a big gamer. I want to make a machine that is far beyond what they need. He is paid to game online
post #5 of 31
The 9xxx series is mainly for experienced overclockers and is not recommended for main stream use. Like the others say, what you really want is an 8370 and an ASUS motherboard. Seriously.

That is what I use and 80% of my time is spent gaming. The CPU rocks but the poor little 290X can't keep up.

If I still had my old setup, the Asrock 990 FX Extreme 9 board works quite well for day to day usage. (Meaning, not overclocked or a mild 4.5 Ghz overclock.) I personally would get an FX 8300 and overclock it from there if you do not already have the FX 9590. I am using a Asus 970 Pro Aura and the chip will go to 4.5 Ghz, up from 3.3 Ghz.

The FX9xxx are terrible buyer's choice. They are just factory overclocked FX83xx and heat up a lot, usually more than a manually overclocked 83xx. The only good thing is that you are guaranteed that it will works at those clocks.

What most gamers here do these days, especially with FX going EOL and Zen coming in few months, is do what ManOf God says. Buy the cheapest FX83xx and overclock it. 99% of them overclock to at least 4.5Ghz.

Also, Asrock and high clocks, doesn't go well together, due to the thinner PCB and worse VRM, that tend to heat up more than ASUS or Gigabyte.

For 4.5Ghz, i 'd do 8300 + ASUS 970 Pro AURA. It's not like it will differ much in real world performance. If you are going to pay for FX9xxx, you may as well buy Intel Skylake, i5 or i7.

Do them right and just get a Skylake I7, especially if he is streaming constantly and it's his actual source of income.

-previous 9590 owner

But yes, either a sabertooth or crosshair-v are the only suitable boards for that cpu and water cooling is highly recommended. Though I will have to be honest here when I say I cannot and do not recommend this setup for a new build... not at all. Especially when you are willing to pay for a 9590.

The chipset you'd be spending money on came out on June 1, 2011...5 years ago. it's missing many current features and the cpu's draw huge power and were not then, let alone now, as fast as i7's for gaming. The heat my 9590 dumped was ridiculous so if this guy is gaming hours on end having a cooler room would be a plus.

I can guarantee that others will now try to argue this fact with benchmarks and this and that, but the bottom line is the platform is just very old and not worth spending money on at this point even if you can get vaguely similar performance with enough overclocking and cooling. I went from a FX-8120 to 8350 to 9590... then went to my current i7 and it was well worth it.

How much are you looking to spend max and do you already have other pc components for it? If he does this for a living he probably doesn't oc as he wants stability so even a non k 6700 is well worth it. The price balances out as you can get by on a much much cheaper motherboard with the intel cpu which negates the price advantage the amd setup would have in comparison to peformance,

You can cool them with cream of the crop air coolers too (Noctuas, Phanteks, etc). But otherwise, yes, you need watercooling. Basically, you can't cool the 9xxx with a "normal air cooler".

You need a behemoth, like this:
