Random PC restart ISSUE

Hi there

First Specs

Corsair AX850 http://www.corsair.com/en/professional-series-gold-ax850-80-plus-gold-certified-fully-modular-power-supply
4790k @ 4.6GHz @ 1.28V
Corsair h100i
Asus rog vii ranger (latest drivers en bios)
Windows 10 (latest updates)
Galax GTX 980 TI HOF (latest drivers)
ADATA XPG 16GB DDR3 2400MHz RAM
2x SSD (128GB + 256GB)
Corsair Air 540 case
PG279Q

My issue is that when I play crysis 3 on not all maxed graphics but sort of max graphics my pc will reboot. No BSOD nothing just a slight freeze then reboots. Now been searching online about this issue and by the looks of it, it may be the PSU that's not stable under super heavy loads on the 12V rail. I find it hard to believe that my psu is not enough but maybe it's on it's way out (maybe not soon but it's not stable anymore).

I've played the following games with no freeze/restart so far.

-BF4 (ultra graphics minus post AA and MSAA played for about 1-2hr's straight on max graphics)
-Doom (played it Wednesday for almost 2-3hr straigt had 1 crash but i think it was game releated as I had to teamviewer from another pc to close the game but without even rebooting game was running fine)
-Project cars (tried twice and did a few laps in the rain having my gpu work 100% for about 99% of the time also driving in sunny weather. Have only tested it for about 30min max but had it standing on a spot where it uses my system the most and it worked for about 40min before I decided to quit)
-Ashes of the singularity (Doing the cpu and gpu benchmark and it works 100%)
-Cinebench a few times and it always completes
-Nvidia Pendilum Demo (Trust me that thing stresses out the gpu a lot. My power usage on my 980 ti even on crysis is not above 100% but on that almost always near or above 100%)
-Aida64 for about 20min with no crashes (stressing memory together with cpu and FPU)
-Heaven benchmark

Now my CPU temps is max about 70C-75C when playing Crysis 3 in extreme cases but doesn't stay there for very long then drops to mid 60's and in Aida64 it's about 78C max.

i have a custom fan curve set in MSI afterburner and my max GPU temps is normally about 71-72C but Crysis is the only game that can get my gpu up to 75C+ but then again the Nvidia pendilum demo also stresses out my card a lot and get it near or past crysis level of temps. Maybe because the Pendilum demo only really uses my gpu the PSU can still handle it but in Crysis3 it uses my cpu and gpu to much and then my psu can't handle it anymore. Not that my PSU is not enough their might be a fault with it.

So I want to know how do I figure out what is the cause. Like I said ran aida64, Heaven and so on but maybe not for long enough periods of time. Maybe someone can give me a tool that will stress test the psu like have my gpu, cpu,HDD and pretty much everything running at the same time so that my PC can almost get to it's absolute maximum power usage it can physically draw from the psu to see maybe my psu is not stable under heavy loads. I was at a friends place and when we compared crysis3 on both systems my pc had a BSOD related to not enough Vcore so maybe my CPU is still not stable.

I know I should try setting my overclock settings to default and test again but first is there a way to test my PSU so that I can do that then see if it triggers the issue and know how to test it when i reset my bios to defaults?

Hope this post is not to long but I just want to get as much info out there so that you guys can better understand the issue here

You are not the first one that had a problem with hard restarts in Crysis 3
Unless it restarts in other games i would just assume its Crysis 3

Do you have a digtal multi meter you can test your PSU with?

Yes i do have one thumb.gif Glad i'm not the first one.

Also what I noticed having 100% load on a system is not always the same power usage. For example BF4 will use my card 100% but the power usage is much lower. I think it also depends what you have displayed on screen for example in BF4 playing on Maximum graphics just looking at near nothing will result in 100% or at least near 100% gpu usage power consumption is not that high but when I hop into a map with lot's of fire etc like operation firestorm standing right next to the fire and looking directly at it makes my card run near or over 100% power usage. So it depends what you render and how the game is implemented.

Crysis makes my power usage on the card go to about 98% although it's high not that high as the Nvidia pendilum test that stresses it almost always over 100% according to MSI afterburner. Another thing i notices although you can get your cpu to be stable under stress test sometimes even a small load can make cpu unstable. I had it once where my cpu was stable under stress test but in BF4 that doesn't really stress my cpu that much it crashed. It might have to do with my cpu and gpu being under load so it's a bit more unstable due to other factors coming into play then.

What's your advice I should do now. I really want to get this sorted if can or at least know if it's crysis3 or not. I have a friend that's running the following specs

Corsair AX1500i
i7-5820k
ASUS RAMPAGE V EXTREME
16GB DDR4 2400mhz memory
ASUS PG278Q
ASUS gtx980 ti Poseidon Platinum
Cooler master 120V
Windows 10

Other than physical specs everything else is pretty much the same. On his system everything works. Crysis 3 runs just fine with no crashed same settings. His PC runs even hotter than mine and the GPU goes up to 80C easily (don't ask me why as I think the airflow in his case is just stupid) CPU temps is a little bit higher than mine on average but yet Crysis 3 runs 100% fine.

Although other games runs fine maybe Crysis 3 is just stresses my power usage more than any other game. The only thing I can think of is by foing stress tests again for like 30min each. Stressing my CPU and memory using aida64 and then gpu with another bench like heaven or valley benchmark. Then if all is fine i run them both at the same time to see what happens if I max out both. If that happens my PSU might be the isse.

Just one last thing to note. My psu is not that new. I had it ever since I got my GTX570 sli in the BLack ops 1 days and I do leave my pc on 24/7 so maybe it's been degrading so much now that my voltages is not stable anymore when under extreme load. I checked with a psu calculator and they say power usage is 760-800w

Reason for your friend high temp is his cooler sucks and he needs to get a much better cooler for that 5820K

And you can forget about what those so called calculators tell you its wrong
Why all online PSU calculators are wrong and is total bogus

I have a theory as to why your PC shuts off and it has nothing to do with the amount of wattage

You see the PSU you have is a Seasonic KM2 and Seasonic units are multi rail despite the fact that they are branded and marketed as single rail
So what could be happening here is Crysis 3 is overloading one of the rails on your AX850 and when that happens OCP kicks in and shuts the PSU off to protect the PSU

Your friend has a single rail PSU so even if it had half the wattage it would not overload a rail as the one rail is much bigger.

Thanks for the info. Will read up on that. The thing is my psu doesn't switch off at all it's rebooting immediately. It's like play for a little bit then freeze for 1-3sec and bang my pc reboots without it switching off then on again. I'm looking for a easy way to maybe trigger the issue before I reset my overclocks to default.

Thanks for the link. My pc doesn't switch off when I get the issue. It freezes and then without touching anything it's almost like someone is pressing the reset button so it doesn't physically switch off or give me any BSOD.

Soem update here. I tested ASUS realbench and in fact do get BSOD WHEA error. on stock only memory on xmp profile (2400mhz) it runs fine for about 11min. Before that it used to crash sooner. At least my cpu is running 4.4GHZ on stress. as per CPU-z while doing ASUS realbench
