New and looking for dedicated system advice.

Howdy. i finally decided to join today and start folding. Alzheimers runs in my family and hit my grandfather hard, he passed away oct last year, so to a point aiding in this research means alot. my current system is sli and i havent had sli enabled in weeks, so i setup my second 960 to fold but I would like to get a dedicated system up though and some tips would be awesome. I currently have a old core 2 quad q8400 and a R9 290 i can put together with a gb or 2 of ram running linux off a flash drive. would it be worth it persay to run this hardware 24/7? Will 1 gig of ram limit me on my ppd and if so would 2 gb help substantially? The system will be placed out in my garage so heat isnt a worry for me but if it wouldnt have the performance of even my single 960 or not much more then it wouldnt really be worth it i would assume ( my 1 960 is getting 183k ppd right now ). i know the 290 is a god hungry power beast but as long as it has a solid ppd output and doesnt raise my electric bill more then a few bucks a month i dont mind, im helping a far greater cause in my opinion and a few bucks in electric is worth it. any and all tips are welcome biggrin.gif thanks

Sorry for your loss redface.gif. However I would like to welcome you to the world of folding here on OCN grouphug.gif

You should be able to fold on the above system, you may lose a few point because of CPU and Ram but the R9 290 is great at folding in WINDOWS but I am not sure how well it performs in Linux. For folding in Windows R9 290 >> than a GTX960 thumb.gif

Check out the GPU PPD database for some info:

Remember to get a passkey (required to get bonus points....think speed bonus)

OCN Team number is 37726

Thank you, i set up the passkey and the team number, working for that 50k points now. Im most lost on the whole teams aspect, so i know OCN is a team as a whole but there are mini teams within, is it mandatory or anything, can i make my own team? it isnt explained too well anywhere that i can find on this bit of the forum. any help is super appreciated biggrin.gif

One of your GTX 960 cards could fold in the TC but that would require a separate passkey. Infinity needs a folder in the NVIDIA category.
