Rumors put it at $250 for the 3gb version, your guess is as good as theirs is.

I'm not going to get on the 1060 hype train on this one but I see no reason for Nvidia to compete with the RX 480 with kid gloves, performance and efficiency-wise considering Pascal's potential.

For me, the big question is its pricing. I know almost everybody is expecting the 1060 to be more expensive but what if Nvidia willing to undercut its competitor to deal maximum damage to the sales of Polaris? They already did that when they launched the GTX 680 at $500 after the HD 7970 which was still at $550 and slower due to immature drivers.

1280 cores. Was so hoping for for another 560Ti. Alas, another 960. Oh well. Definitely buying one for the backup rig. What else can I do? I'm trapped.

a TI is still a possibility, given the gap between 1060 and 1070
post #146 of 735
I'm expecting 60% of the 1080's performance, at 40% of the price. Give or take. I think that's generally been the trend of X60 vs X80.

At the end of the day how much does the cooling design factor into the price? You can get heatpipe cpu coolers like the 212 hyper evo for $30 retail, and the majority of AIB cards are 2-3 fans, heat pipes/vapor chamber and an aluminum HS. So I highly suspect that any non-aio cooling solutions are pretty insignificant cost wise.

this one would be a lot closer to 50% perf, as GP106 is literally 1/2 of GP104.
Nvidia has like 80% marketshare so they can overcharge and people will pay it because of all the fanboys. Just look at all forums. The vast majority of the fanboys are all Nvidia guys.

The rx 480 performs at about the level of a 390 atm. The gtx 1070 is about 53% faster at 2k resolutions. The 1060 looks to be about 15% faster than a 480 or 5% faster than a 390x. So a 1070 is about 33% faster than a 1060. They want people to buy a 1070 because that's probably where there revenue are the highest. The 1070 is the top of the perf/$ curve for Nvidia. Just like with the 970 and 960, the 960 was cheaper but the 970 was much better in terms of perf/$.

This puts a floor on the price of a 1060. They have to price the 6gb 1060 above $285 to keep the $/perf of the 1070 superior (at the current MSRP of $379 which IMO is fake since you can't find it anywhere at that price but that's another story). IMO, that means the 1060 will probably be $249/$299 maybe even something like $279/329. The lower end version will be gimped at resolutions above 1080p because of the 3gb of ram (but have better perf/$ than the 1070). The 1070 will be superior to the higher-end card in terms of perf/$. The 1060 will also be somewhat supply limited as Nvidia wants to keep its margins high and clear out its stock of old cards.

So Nvidia will offer an option that will be still be beaten by the 480 in terms of perf/$ but still an option for people in that price range which will sell well because of brand recognition alone. Since many people only consider Nvidia cards, this will give people in the 970/980 market right now a reason to upgrade since the perf/$ will be superior to existing 970/980 prices. I'm calling it from my armchair of wisdom guys, watch out!

So was the 960 compared to the 980. Yet it performed at around 60% of the 980. (Depending on the game, and its appetite for memory bandwidth)
