6700k/ddr4 combo is faster, not a whole lot, but if buying new, I'd definitely get the newest out there. If you can pickup some ddr3 and a 4790k/mobo for far cheaper, I'd probably go that route

see i already have a ddr3 setup with 8gigs of ripjaws...as i am currenlty running an amd setup so either i have to ditch the cpu mobo to get ddr3 setup or ditch cpu mobo and ram to get the ddr4 setup. as i asked...i would use it for fsx and other games. so which way to go? and is it worthy? i mean cpu wise a 4790K vs a 6700K
post #4 of 33
Another reason is 6700k is socket 1151 and ,you can upgrade to the next generation Kaby lake when it is available, without changing the motherboard.

Get 6700k .

6700k and 3600+ MHz DDR4 memory, otherwise it will have a humble performance boost over the 4790K with fast DDR3 memory.

I went through this same dilemma, a few months back and ultimately I decided on the i7-4790k, partly because I have a microcenter near me and I was able to pick up a motherboard and CPU for $380 while keeping the rest of my system intact and partly because I was coming from and AMD FX-8320 and there were gains across the board from the AMD to Intel transition regardless if I went Sandy, Ivy, Haswell, Skylake.

I could've spent the extra $100 on DDR4/Skylake but in the end it wasn't worth it. AMD's Zen is coming soon and I'd rather buy an E-o-L package and ride the storm to see if Zen will be worth it, then spend extra money and get scared to switch because 1151 still has life in it.

I made my decision based on the Anandtech Comparison Bench http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1260?vs=1543 and as you can see, STOCK for STOCK, the differences are minimal in pretty much everything.

HOWEVER, if you get blazing fast ram, like 3000+, on Skylake your gaming performance will be improved significantly. Digital Foundry

That's what I did, I was coming from a 3770k@4.8ghz+16gb 1866mhz ddr3, went to a 4.7ghz 6700k and 16gb 3600mhz ddr4(though I can't get it to run any faster than 3333mhz..), to be honest, there's definitely a performance boost, but it's not that great of one, except in dolphin, it's great in dolphin

6700k with fast ram is substantially faster than 4790k with whatever RAM that you've got now.

Since you're coming from AMD, you probably have slower RAM that you'd want to replace for either CPU anyway - 4790k's benefit quite a lot from ~2133+ ddr3 and 6700k's benefit a lot from 3000+ ddr4.

If your ram isn't 2133 or higher get the 6700k.
