Regular people have a hard time getting past the soap opera effect of HFR content and you want to push VR down their throats. You're delusional.

Have you ever tried it? Current tech is the absolute minimum that can completely trick you into thinking you are there. It is in no way limited to racing or shooters. (Shooters? It isn't great for those yet either, no one has figured out a good control mechanic unless you like hover junkies).

VR isn't ready yet, content is the problem, but assuming content is released VR is seriously different, like TV instead of radio.

It is very different than any other display, you cannot compare to HFR video, that experiance is almost identical to what everyone is already used to.

I think most people who try to imagine what VR is like, imagine themselves at a 3D movie, or a seated Oculus experience, flying a spaceship or driving a car, and objects are at some distance. At that point it's just another display technology, and similar to 3D.

There's an article I can't find right now that discusses what VR really adds though, and that is the close-space experience. Hold your arms out, and turn around. Everything that occurs within this space toggles a kind of weird reaction in the body; it's a more intimate and freakier experience. If it's a human avatar, or a threat, or a tiny star / planet / solar system that you're manipulating (Universe Sandbox is mindblowing), your adrenal and endorphin centers goes completely haywire. It's completely unlike any existing 3D experience from a flat screen, and completely unlike any VR experience where objects are at a safe and traditional gaming distance.

You realize your lack of interest doesn't mean it is a gimmick, right?

The definition of a gimmick is:
a trick or device intended to attract attention, publicity, or business.

This means a gimmick is something intended to sell or promote something else, 3D is a gimmick becaues it sounds cool in order to sell TVs. VR isn't a gimmick because it isn't attached to anything in order to sell that version instead of another option without it.

VR is not a buzzword intended to promote the sale of the CV1 or the Vive, VR is the entirity of the product which offers a completely new experiance.

What the CV1 and the Vive are right now cannot be mainstream.

I also understand your lack of interest in VR, even future VR. If you are used to listening to the game on the radio why would you want a TV? You would have to sit and watch it instead of being able to move around and do something else at the same time. VR is this change again, instead of only requiring the attention of your ears and your eyes it also requires your sense of place and your entire field of view.

So you can just play VR with a headset? No hardware? No console?

What is your point? VR is a gimmick to sell computers and/or consoles? rolleyes.gif

Edit: note; Oculus, Valve, and HTC do not sell consoles or computers.

We will be seeing all in 1 headsets which is besides the point, this is an argument you lost, rethink your position on this and learn something.

Your old knowledge always works till it don't, and things change. VR signals the start of a very different world. Feel free to put your head in the sand but your ass is showing and we would rather you cover it up by reflection on this argument and why we might be right given the scope of how fast technology changes vs how our perception of that change(what works). Like growing older is a series of changes and many are not cycles or more of the same but signs and evidence of progress, irreversible change in the course of our development. This is easy to see as we humans grow and hit our teens, 40's etc, well it happens to society and tech too , we can't go back does not just refer to living like a caveman in a nostalgic sense, but it also like the internet, smartphones, Twitter and tinder just are incorporated into the fabric of being human. Any issues with vr are tech related and those barriers are being pushed farther back almost monthly.

This is a great opportunity for you to as, why are these guys so excited, is there something I have not noticed about it yet, some dot I have not connected?

School, law, pro sports, medicine creative design, industrial design, social engineering, all forms of entertainment including traditional PC MONITOR GAMING in the VR space (any space you want), therapy, job training and retraining. That is just a drop of areas which will be very influenced by VR, add AR and AI to the mix. Stage 1 civilization communications network looks to be shaping up well and on schedule 😉

You have a point. Most of what we've seen are either tech demos or very poor early-release tests. Everyone's going ape about what is essentially a third-rate wave shooter right now.

Some of the good games are very good experiences, but would be just indie or middling games if not for VR. And so far the VR films that have been released are awkward and poor storytelling experiences.

How to deliver a quality cutscene with real tension when the gamer can just turn and look at a blank spot on the wall or play with his gun will be a real challenge.
