Just giving out a heads up here that Amazon is having its "Prime Day" again (2nd year doing this) on July 12th.

It was more of a flop last year for what was sold, basically clearing out the warehouse it seemed, but at least a few good items should be mixed in.

Rules should be the same as last year, you need to be an Amazon Prime member, but the free trial does count if you have one available.

Walmart and a few other retailers/etailers will likely follow suit.

Woot! Can't wait to be unimpressed

It was pretty cringey how Amazon was advertising it for weeks with tons of commercials on TV, only for it to have one of the worst sales I've seen.

What I have noticed, sale, like they were 10-15 years ago is now different, nothing really goes on sales now, its all just pricing competitively daily/weekly.

Blackfriday and Cyber Monday used to be huge days we electronic people were excited about, now its companies selling there overflow stock before the end of the year so make there bottom line look better.

They were likely just baiting everyone into signing up for Prime and made a good profit there since a lot of users probably didn't utilize their membership for a year.
If you were into diapers, random jewelry and clothes, or whatever else was sitting on the shelves for awhile, then it was a good sale for you.
They relied heavily on the "more deals than black friday" slogan where quantity certainly did not mean quality.

I think the internet sales is what really changed those 2 big shopping days.
People used to (and i guess still do to a point) camp out at least a day before just so they could get into Target, Best Buy, etc. as a first 50 shopper because that was the only way to get those kinds of deals.
Now the internet is filled with e-tailers and simple ways to compare prices or price match, so yes it has changed to a year round competitive price market.
Retailers are now taking it to the point where they release Black Friday specific models of TVs and other items to either offer it at lower prices or gain a bit more profit since its feature list or quality is lower.

If i recall correctly, didn't the UK try a Black Friday and/or Cyber Monday for the first time last year to mimic the US?
I know they did something just don't remember for sure if last year was their first to be big with it.
I kind of forgot about it, but am curious how well it did for them.

Amazon has a preview link. I was seriously thinking of picking up a BLU 2gb phone for $60. I can't tell if it is wifi capable.

Was seriously unimpressed with this last year on 2 counts. Ive got prime anyhow but...
  1. No advertising ahead what would be on sale and when.
  2. No big ticket or high demand items on sale.
  3. On a week day and only 1 day.
On the first count. I do not have the time nor patience to sit at the computer all day waiting for something to maybe go on sale. If they told people even a few days ahead what would be on sale when...they dont even need to declare the price, just what and when...I think itd go alot better.

On the second count, and I haven't heard anyone argue otherwise, the types of items that went "on sale" were mostly lame stuff and the price cuts were nominal. If they want this to become a thing and compete with Black Friday then they need to put things like TV's, tablets, laptops, etc on sale and actually cut the price a meaningful amount.

Lastly, the timing. Why do this on a Tuesday (dont recall which day of the week it was last year but I recall it was a week day)? They should do this so that its multiple days and includes a week day and a day on the weekend. Something like Fri/Sat or Sun/Mon would make it so people have a chance to shop on a day off from work. However this point is mostly moot if they tell people whats on sale and when.

I am not anticipating a big change from last year to this year. Ill likely keep an eye on it but will be working 11 hours that day. Also the types of things id be interested on sale will likely not have substantial sales (TV, tablet, computer stuff).

It's because most of their "PRIME" deals are from 3rd party sellers and not Amazon themselves. The PRIME deals have to be something like 20% below or better than the last 30 day average price on Amazon. If Amazon is already taking 8-15% from a sale price how can the 3rd party sellers afford to make anything on a "hot" item. Of course it's going to be a garage sale. You are likely to be buying items that are actually below cost for these 3rd party sellers just trying to recoup some of the money on the junk.

They also have a moto G which I am interested in until I saw this part... "Offers and ads, including personalized deals and recommendations, display on the phone's lockscreen"

I guess maybe you can root and clear that junk off.

One last quick bump for this as a heads up, I think i read that it starts at 3am ET.
Hopefully they learned from last year and will add some more "useful" things into the bunch as well, but also not put it in insanely small quantities just to say it was offered and sells out in seconds.
I think i recall last year that people found some good deals in the warehouse section where there was an extra discount applied and they got some decent pricing on headphones, GPUs, etc. but of course the quantity on those is super low, perhaps just 1, and there is a bit more risk on it being used or missing accessories i believe.

I also noticed Walmart is offering deals and one of the bigger things is that they dropped the minimum purchase price for free shipping (I think for the full week).

I wont be around to turn this into a deals thread or anything like that, so don't come looking for the best sales in here.
I was just trying to give the heads up when I first heard about it.

Hopefully a few of you get some decent stuff at a good price

The curved 55 inch 4k samsung tv for $649.99 wasn't a good deal? That's $300 off what I paid months ago!
