Ive been recently eyeing a 1070 from my current 970, but don't really know if that's the best path or not. I know my oc'd 2500 at 4.4Ghz is still no slouch, but wouldn't mind upgrading in some sense. Just can't decide if I'd be better off starting with a new cpu/mobo/ram and keeping the 970 (maybe another 970 in sli?), or maybe trying to get more life out of my 1155 setup with a 3770k and faster ram. Or do you think my 2500 would be up to the task of powering a 1070? Any advice or ideas? thanks!
It sound's like you are using this for gaming so I think you would be better to spend the money on a 1080 when they get closer to the MSRP. Yes you would notice some gains and you could probably use a more modern CPU but as you said, 4.5ghz is a pretty nice OC. You are going to notice way more gains with a 1080 over a 1070 than if you get a skylake and a 1070 combo. Simply put, the 1080 with your current chip is probably the best option here. Although it can difficult to shell out that kind of money on one card.
Now do you think snagging a cheap 3770k for the time being could help cpu load while gaming? When I have twitch streams open while playing something I do get some stuttering, not sure if an i7 could help there or not. As for ram, you reckon Id see any benefits from bumping to 2133 vs my 1600? Just soo many paths I could take lol. Shopping around, im pretty surprised how cheap 3930k 6 cores could be had for, but that'd mean a new mobo and possibly ram still ha. As for 1070/1080s, im still hesitant on buying until prices level back down, definitely don't want to overpay for a card
Yes if if you are twitch streaming you probably do infact want an i7 because of HT giving you more logical cores to balance the load. I'd say get an i7 and a 1070 then. Perhaps even look at the potential of SLI in the future or sell the 1070 and get something a little better if it doesn't seem like it's enough.
Thats what I thought with hyperthreading, luckily im just watching streams, my internet isn't enough to stream myself, looks like some more research should help maybe lol
I had 2500k my game would stutter playing game and watching stream i upgrade to 4790k made a big difference playing game and watching twitch streams. so yeah go for which ever is cheaper i7 cpu.
In a pure gaming scenario with nothing else going on, an i5 is just fine. Once you start doing a lot of other things like streaming in the background, HT becomes very noticeable. Games are not as CPU demanding as they were in previous years so more focus should be given to the GPU still but stuttering is very annoying I know so go with a used i7 and a 1070.
I have a 970 and 3770k I play everything I own at 1080p 144Hz zero trouble but I run at 4.6ghz daily and my gpu overclock like a beast, I say get a 3770, return the 1070 and run sli 970s with the 3770k

Was really looking into a new upgrade for BF1, considering I was having 30fps on med in the closed alpha, ended up maxing out everything at 1080p and restarted my pc. I about died with joy when my game was now 50-60fps, every option on, my 970 really surprised me there. Really starting to think a 1070 may be my next card considering my 2500k obviously isn't bottlenecking me at 4.4ghz much. Now if only someone had 1070s in stock. Least my 970 is still a champ while I wait

Newegg had the R9-390X on sale a couple of days ago--fit my budget quite well so I went ahead and bought it. Now running Witcher 3 1920x1080 with all settings set at ultra and the dang thing is flying!
I have a i2600k @ 4.4ghz and I got the gtx 1070 it's still really good my only issue is when I stream high graphic games I can see my cpu being my bottle neck
I"m hoping to wait on the new intel as I don't think it's worth the upgrade yet
Go with a 1080 if u have the money I'm pretty happy with my 1070 so far
I did upgrade from a gtx 770 2gb so it's a large upgrade for myself.
Battlefield 1 alpha has really impressed me optimization wise, ran a test of 5760x1080 triple monitor on my 970, all maxed everything and was still pulling 30fps. This 2500k and 970 really surprised me there. Can't wait to see how this 1070 fares when it gets here
I'm also in a similar position. I had a 2500K and DDR3-1600 RAM that was doing pretty well for the most part, but I wanted to max out my platform. Since it's not all games for me, I knew my usage would benefit from hyperthreading too.
I upgraded my 2500K to a 2600K and got DDR3-2133 RAM, but I haven't been able to get two different 2600Ks to overclock as high as my old 2500K, so now I'm thinking about delidding and overclocking a 3770K. I'm doing this partly for the challenge and hobby of it though, so cost isn't my greatest concern, but I do want to make the most of my minimum framerates.
I only game on 1200p and the only game in my library that would really put a video card through the ringer is GTA V, so I'm just waiting for a good AIB partner RX 480 to replace my GTX 760.
I was told elsewhere my 2500k would severely bottleneck my 1070, sure haven't seen signs of such, hell gtav on my 970 settings pulled 60+fps on high/ultra mix at 1080p, now same settings but at 5760x1080 triple monitor, and it still performs pretty much the same, really amazing
Yea, I ended up going to a 6700k a couple months after buying a 1070, as my 2500k was pretty much pegged at 100 while gaming. The i7 really is a great cpu to power this beast gpu
I'm on a similar boat. I decided to get a 1080 when the price gets closer to 500€ (likely when they finally launch the Ti), and 7700k with 32gb ddr4 and asus z70 apex mainboard.
Cant wait much longer ?

It definitely raised fps a good deal, more stabe minimum fps, and cpu usage was most noticeably lower. It blew my mind seeing cpu usage go from 100 during games to like 50% and lower. And the pc just overall feels much snappier. Did my games run ok on my 2500k? Sure, but this upgrade gave me newer ram and much more headway. If you have the means I'd say go for it
