Projects of the Month for July 2016

July Projects of the Month

Van Der Waerden Numbers

Start: 52 - Goal: 30 - End: 23  |  This is a fairly new math project.  Not sure if tasks will last, but let's give it a go and see how far we can move up.  If task availability is good, then this goal will probably need a revision. :D

Enigma@Home

Start: 47 - Goal: 44 - End: 39  |  Our previous high ranking was 43; time to make a push and climb the ladder a few spots.

GPUGrid

Start: 24  - Goal: 23 - End: 24   |  It has been more than 1.5 years since we had GPUGrid as a POTM. Major oversight on my part, so let's see if we can give the project a nice bump. :D

With DENIS@Home still working on their new app, it is time we looked for a new project to run for a long term goal.  Post up any ideas for projects that would be suited for an extended run up the rankings. :thumb:

Wow, the GPU one is the first project I did for a POTM, if I remember correctly - has it been that long already? i'll switch my phones over to Enigma in a moment, as well as get some of the Van Der Waerden into the queue - a queue that's about 1880 tasks for a cpu and two gpus atm, so I don't quite know if it'll let me take any lol! One of these days I'll remember to put "no new tasks" on the projects that have plenty when I'm trying to get tasks for a different project... And one day I'll also remember to hit that button BEFORE increasing my queue! tongue.gif

Woohoo, managed to sneak in another 69 tasks. My poor, poor hard drive (and 4770k)!!

EDIT: Interesting that BOINCstats is showing VDW as "123Numbers" on their listings

I believe that 123Numbers was the original address and name of the project when it first started.  I think that Willy leaves the names the same, even if they change, so users don't get confused and think it is a new project.

Immediate computation error on the 1st enigma task on my Nexus 9 so no go there.

Ahhhh, makes sense.

Had the same thing happen on my HTC One M8, but I'll see how it pans out. If it doesn't play well, guess it's back to Rosetta@Home on the phones, and then leave a comment in the forums asking why there's an Android app if it immediately crashes. HTC is running Android 6.0, but my Samsung Galaxy S3 which is running 4.4 is having no problems with Enigma@Home tasks. Rather weird.

I'm thinking it's old coding that isn't compatible with the way things are done in Android 5.0 and above.

EDIT: Yup, they're using a rather outdated Android client, so anything running 5.0 or higher is screwed. http://www.enigmaathome.net/forum_thread.php?id=603

It's working on my Nexus 7. CSG doesn't work on the Nexus 9 but does on the 7. Universe is the opposite.. pogs works on both though.

I am putting in some work for gpugrid and the numbers project. Don't really see the point for enigma except for pure fun
post #8 of 100
Van Der Waerden seems even more pointless than Enigma. Not sure of any practical purpose to finding sequences of BRRBRBRBRBRBRBRBRBRBRBRBRBRB....

GPUGrid on the other hand. Terribly slow downloads and the larger files keep stopping. It only loads my 970 to 80%. 2nd unit is stuck downloading trying to run 2 tasks at once. I've had several computation errors so far. I've backed the OC down well below what collatz and FAH can handle.

Edit: Had to wait for the download to timeout so I could force a try. 2nd unit only ups GPU util from 80% to 90%.

Van Der Waerden is a memory pig with 32gb on a 32 thread server I can only get 18 tasks to run before I run out of memory

EDIT: ok I don't want to be a tool but I think I am only going to do gpugrid for this months potm

It definitely is a memory hog.  Running 32 tasks, current memory usage is sitting at 55 GB.
